1 When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before thee:

1 Cuando te sientes a comer con algún gobernante, considera bien lo que está delante de ti;

2 And put a knife to thy throat, if thou be a man given to appetite.

2 y pon cuchillo a tu garganta si tienes gran apetito.

3 Be not desirous of his dainties: for they are deceitful meat.

3 No codicies sus manjares delicados, porque es pan engañoso.

4 Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom.

4 No te afanes por hacerte rico; deja de apoyarte en tu propia prudencia.

5 Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

5 ¿Has de poner tus ojos en las riquezas que no son nada? Porque ciertamente se harán alas, como alas de águila, y volarán al cielo.

6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:

6 No comas pan del maligno de ojo ni codicies sus manjares,

7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee.

7 porque cual es su pensamiento en su corazón, tal es él. Come y bebe, te dirá, pero su corazón no está contigo.

8 The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

8 Vomitarás el bocado que comiste y perderás tus suaves palabras.

9 Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

9 No hables a oídos del necio, porque menospreciará la prudencia de tus palabras.

10 Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

10 No muevas el lindero antiguo, ni entres en los campos de los huérfanos,

11 For their redeemer is mighty; he shall plead their cause with thee.

11 porque el redentor de ellos es el Fuerte; él defenderá la causa de ellos contra ti.

12 Apply thine heart unto instruc tion, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.

12 Aplica tu corazón a la enseñanza y tus oídos a las palabras del conocimiento.

13 Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

13 No rehúses corregir al muchacho, porque si lo castigas con vara, no morirá.

14 Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.

14 Lo castigarás con vara y librarás su alma del Seol.

15 My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, también a mí se me alegrará el corazón;

16 Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

16 mis entrañas también se alegrarán cuando tus labios hablen cosas rectas.

17 Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

17 No tenga tu corazón envidia de los pecadores; antes bien, persevera en el temor de Jehová todo el día,

18 For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.

18 porque ciertamente hay un porvenir, y tu esperanza no será talada.

19 Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.

19 Oye, hijo mío, y sé sabio, y endereza tu corazón al camino.

20 Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

20 No estés con los bebedores de vino ni con los comilones de carne;

21 For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

21 porque el bebedor y el comilón se empobrecerán, y el mucho dormir los hará vestir de harapos.

22 Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

22 Oye a tu padre, que te engendró; y cuando tu madre envejezca, no la menosprecies.

23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

23 Compra la verdad y no la vendas; también la sabiduría, la enseñanza y el entendimiento.

24 The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

24 Mucho se alegrará el padre del justo, y el que engendra hijo sabio se regocijará con él.

25 Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.

25 ¡Alégrense tu padre y tu madre! ¡Y regocíjese la que te dio a luz!

26 My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.

26 Dame, hijo mío, tu corazón, y observen tus ojos mis caminos.

27 For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.

27 Porque fosa profunda es la ramera; y pozo angosto, la extraña.

28 She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

28 Ciertamente ella está al acecho de la presa, y multiplica entre los hombres a los pérfidos.

29 Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

29 ¿Para quién será el ay? ¿Para quién el pesar? ¿Para quién las rencillas? ¿Para quién las quejas? ¿Para quién las heridas en balde? ¿Para quién lo enrojecido de los ojos?

30 They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

30 Para los que se detienen mucho en el vino; para los que van buscando vinos mezclados.

31 Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

31 No mires al vino cuando rojea, cuando resplandece su color en la copa, cuando entra suavemente.

32 At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

32 Al final muerde como serpiente, y pica como áspid.

33 Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

33 Tus ojos a las extrañas, y tu corazón hablará perversidades.

34 Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

34 Y serás como el que yace en medio del mar, o como el que está en la punta de un mástil.

35 They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

35 Y dirás: Me hirieron, pero no me dolió; me golpearon, pero no lo sentí. Cuando despierte, aún volveré en busca de más.
