1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab.

1 Y acampaba Israel en Sitim, y el pueblo empezó a fornicar con las hijas de Moab,

2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods: and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods.

2 las cuales invitaban al pueblo a los sacrificios de sus dioses; y el pueblo comió y se inclinó a sus dioses.

3 And Israel joined himself unto Baal-peor: and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

3 Y se adhirió el pueblo a Baal-peor; y el furor de Jehová se encendió contra Israel.

4 And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the heads of the people, and hang them up before the LORD against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

4 Y Jehová dijo a Moisés: Toma a todos los príncipes del pueblo, y ahórcalos ante Jehová a plena luz del sol, y el furor de la ira de Jehová se apartará de Israel.

5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baal-peor.

5 Entonces Moisés dijo a los jueces de Israel: Matad cada uno a aquellos de los vuestros que se han adherido a Baal-peor.

6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

6 Y he aquí un hombre de los hijos de Israel vino y trajo una madianita a sus hermanos, ante los ojos de Moisés y de toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, mientras lloraban ellos a la entrada del tabernáculo de reunión.

7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand;

7 Y lo vio Finees hijo de Eleazar hijo de Aarón, el sacerdote, y se levantó de en medio de la congregación y tomó una lanza en su mano,

8 And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

8 y fue tras el hombre de Israel a la tienda y los alanceó por el vientre a ambos, al hombre de Israel y a la mujer. Y cesó la mortandad de los hijos de Israel.

9 And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

9 Y murieron en aquella mortandad veinticuatro mil.

10 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

10 Entonces Jehová habló a Moisés, diciendo:

11 Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, hath turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

11 Finees hijo de Eleazar hijo de Aarón, el sacerdote, ha apartado mi furor de los hijos de Israel, llevado de celo por mi causa entre ellos; por eso yo no he consumido en mi celo a los hijos de Israel.

12 Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

12 Por tanto, diles: He aquí yo establezco mi convenio de paz con él;

13 And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

13 y tendrá él, y su descendencia después de él, el convenio del sacerdocio perpetuo, por cuanto tuvo celo por su Dios e hizo expiación por los hijos de Israel.

14 Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianitish woman, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a chief house among the Simeonites.

14 Y el nombre del hombre muerto, el que fue muerto con la madianita, era Zimri hijo de Salu, jefe de una casa paterna de Simeón.

15 And the name of the Midianitish woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur; he was head over a people, and of a chief house in Midian.

15 Y el nombre de la mujer madianita muerta era Cozbi hija de Zur, jefe de la gente de una casa paterna en Madián.

16 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

16 Y Jehová habló a Moisés, diciendo:

17 Vex the Midianites, and smite them:

17 Hostigad a los madianitas y heridlos,

18 For they vex you with their wiles, wherewith they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, the daughter of a prince of Midian, their sister, which was slain in the day of the plague for Peor's sake.

18 por cuanto ellos os afligieron a vosotros con sus ardides con que os han engañado en el asunto de Peor, y en el asunto de Cozbi, hija del príncipe de Madián, su hermana, la cual fue muerta el día de la mortandad por causa de Peor.
