1 And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.

1 Y hubo gran clamor del pueblo y de sus esposas contra sus hermanos judíos.

2 For there were that said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore we take up corn for them, that we may eat, and live.

2 Y había quienes decían: Nosotros, nuestros hijos y nuestras hijas, somos muchos; por tanto, obtengamos grano para comer y vivir.

3 Some also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.

3 Y había quienes decían: Hemos empeñado nuestras tierras, y nuestras viñas y nuestras casas, para conseguir grano a causa del hambre.

4 There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.

4 Y había quienes decían: Hemos tomado prestado dinero para el tributo del rey sobre nuestras tierras y viñas.

5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children: and, lo, we bring into bondage our sons and our daughters to be servants, and some of our daughters are brought unto bondage already: neither is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.

5 Ahora bien, nuestra carne es como la carne de nuestros hermanos, nuestros hijos como sus hijos; y he aquí que nosotros sometemos a nuestros hijos y a nuestras hijas a servidumbre, y hay algunas de nuestras hijas que ya son esclavas; y no hay facultad en nuestras manos para rescatarlas, porque nuestras tierras y nuestras viñas son de otros.

6 And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.

6 Y me enojé en gran manera cuando oí su clamor y estas palabras.

7 Then I consulted with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I set a great assembly against them.

7 Entonces lo medité en mi corazón, y reprendí a los nobles y a los oficiales y les dije: ¿Estáis cobrando, cada uno, usura a su hermano? Y convoqué contra ellos una gran asamblea.

8 And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, which were sold unto the heathen; and will ye even sell your brethren? or shall they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found nothing to answer.

8 Y les dije: Nosotros, según nuestras posibilidades, rescatamos a nuestros hermanos judíos que habían sido vendidos a las naciones; y vosotros hasta vendéis a vuestros hermanos para que sean de nuevo vendidos a nosotros. Y callaron, pues no tuvieron qué responder.

9 Also I said, It is not good that ye do: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the heathen our enemies?

9 Y añadí: No es bueno lo que hacéis. ¿No debéis andar en el temor de nuestro Dios, para no ser oprobio de las naciones enemigas nuestras?

10 I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, might exact of them money and corn: I pray you, let us leave off this usury.

10 También yo, mis hermanos y mis criados les hemos prestado dinero y grano; os ruego, pues, que abandonemos esta usura.

11 Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the hundredth part of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that ye exact of them.

11 Os ruego que les devolváis hoy sus tierras, sus viñas, sus olivares, y sus casas, y la centésima parte del dinero, y del grano, del vino y del aceite que les exigís.

12 Then said they, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayest. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.

12 Y dijeron: Lo devolveremos y no les exigiremos nada; haremos así como tú dices. Entonces convoqué a los sacerdotes y les hice jurar que harían conforme a esto.

13 Also I shook my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, that performeth not this promise, even thus be he shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. And the people did according to this promise.

13 Además sacudí mi vestido y dije: Así sacuda Dios de su casa y de su trabajo a todo hombre que no cumpla esto; y así sea sacudido y quede vacío. Y respondió toda la congregación: ¡Amén! Y alabaron a Jehová. Y el pueblo hizo conforme a esto.

14 Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year even unto the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.

14 También desde el día en que el rey me mandó que fuese gobernador de ellos en la tierra de Judá, desde el año veinte del rey Artajerjes hasta el año treinta y dos, doce años, ni yo ni mis hermanos comimos el pan del gobernador.

15 But the former governors that had been before me were chargeable unto the people, and had taken of them bread and wine, beside forty shekels of silver; yea, even their servants bare rule over the people: but so did not I, because of the fear of God.

15 Pero los primeros gobernadores que fueron antes de mí gravaron al pueblo, y tomaron de ellos, por el pan y por el vino, más de cuarenta siclos de plata; y aun sus criados se enseñoreaban del pueblo; pero yo no hice así, a causa del temor de Dios.

16 Yea, also I continued in the work of this wall, neither bought we any land: and all my servants were gathered thither unto the work.

16 También en la obra de este muro restauré mi parte, y no compramos terrenos; y todos mis criados juntos estaban allí para la obra.

17 Moreover there were at my table an hundred and fifty of the Jews and rulers, beside those that came unto us from among the heathen that are about us.

17 Además ciento cincuenta hombres de los judíos y oficiales, y los que venían a nosotros de las naciones que nos rodeaban, estaban a mi mesa.

18 Now that which was prepared for me daily was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this required not I the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.

18 Y lo que se preparaba para cada día era un buey y seis ovejas escogidas; y también se preparaban aves para mí, y cada diez días, toda clase de vino en abundancia; y con todo esto nunca requerí el pan del gobernador, porque la servidumbre de este pueblo era grave.

19 Think upon me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people.

19 Acuérdate de mí para bien, Dios mío, y de todo lo que hice por este pueblo.
