1 On that day they read in the book of Moses in the audience of the people; and therein was found written, that the Ammonite and the Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever;

1 Aquel día se leyó en el libro de Moisés a oídos del pueblo, y fue hallado escrito en él que los amonitas y los moabitas no debían entrar jamás en la congregación de Dios,

2 Because they met not the children of Israel with bread and with water, but hired Balaam against them, that he should curse them: howbeit our God turned the curse into a blessing.

2 por cuanto no salieron a recibir a los hijos de Israel con pan y agua, sino que dieron dinero a Balaam para que los maldijera; pero nuestro Dios convirtió la maldición en bendición.

3 Now it came to pass, when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.

3 Y sucedió que, cuando oyeron la ley, separaron de Israel a todos los emparentados con extranjeros.

4 And before this, Eliashib the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God, was allied unto Tobiah:

4 Y antes de esto, el sacerdote Eliasib, siendo encargado de la cámara de la casa de nuestro Dios, se había aliado con Tobías

5 And he had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meat offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which was commanded to be given to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the offerings of the priests.

5 y le había hecho una gran habitación, en la cual guardaban antes las ofrendas, y el incienso, y los utensilios, y el diezmo del grano, del vino y del aceite, que se había mandado dar a los levitas, a los cantores y a los porteros, y la ofrenda de los sacerdotes.

6 But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king:

6 Pero durante todo este tiempo yo no estaba en Jerusalén, porque en el año treinta y dos de Artajerjes, rey de Babilonia, fui ante el rey; y después de unos días obtuve permiso del rey.

7 And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.

7 Y cuando llegué a Jerusalén, entendí el mal que había hecho Eliasib en atención a Tobías, haciendo para él habitación en el atrio de la casa de Dios.

8 And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber.

8 Y me disgustó en gran manera, y arrojé todos los enseres de la casa de Tobías fuera de la habitación,

9 Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.

9 y mandé que limpiasen las habitaciones e hice volver allí los utensilios de la casa de Dios con las ofrendas de grano y el incienso.

10 And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field.

10 Descubrí asimismo que las porciones para los levitas no se les habían dado, y que los levitas y los cantores que hacían el servicio habían huido, cada uno a su campo.

11 Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

11 Y contendí con los oficiales y dije: ¿Por qué está la casa de Dios abandonada? Y los reuní y los puse en sus puestos.

12 Then brought all Judah the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries.

12 Y todo Judá trajo el diezmo del grano, del vino y del aceite a los almacenes.

13 And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute unto their brethren.

13 Y puse como encargados de los almacenes a Selemías, el sacerdote, y a Sadoc, el escriba, y de los levitas, a Pedaías; y junto a ellos Hanán hijo de Zacur, hijo de Matanías; porque eran considerados fieles y estaban a cargo de repartir las porciones a sus hermanos.

14 Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and wipe not out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for the offices thereof.

14 Acuérdate de mí, oh Dios mío, en cuanto a esto, y no borres todo el bien que hice en la casa de mi Dios y en su servicio.

15 In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

15 En aquellos días vi en Judá a algunos que pisaban en lagares en el día de reposo, y que acarreaban gavillas, y que cargaban sobre asnos vino, y también uvas, e higos y toda clase de carga; y los traían a Jerusalén en el día de reposo; y los amonesté acerca del día en que vendían las provisiones.

16 There dwelt men of Tyre also therein, which brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath unto the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem.

16 También estaban en ella tirios que traían pescado y toda mercadería, y vendían en día de reposo a los hijos de Judá en Jerusalén.

17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

17 Y contendí con los nobles de Judá y les dije: ¿Qué mala cosa es esta que vosotros hacéis, profanando así el día de reposo?

18 Did not your fathers thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? yet ye bring more wrath upon Israel by profaning the sabbath.

18 ¿No hicieron así vuestros padres, y trajo nuestro Dios todo este mal sobre nosotros y sobre esta ciudad? Y vosotros añadís ira sobre Israel profanando el día de reposo.

19 And it came to pass, that when the gates of Jerusalem began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and some of my servants set I at the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the sabbath day.

19 Y sucedió que, cuando iba oscureciendo a las puertas de Jerusalén, antes del día de reposo, mandé que se cerrasen las puertas y ordené que no las abriesen hasta después del día de reposo; y puse a las puertas algunos de mis criados, para que en día de reposo no entrase ninguna carga.

20 So the merchants and sellers of all kind of ware lodged without Jerusalem once or twice.

20 Y se quedaron fuera de Jerusalén una o dos veces los negociantes y los que vendían toda especie de mercancía.

21 Then I testified against them, and said unto them, Why lodge ye about the wall? if ye do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the sabbath.

21 Y los amonesté y les dije: ¿Por qué pasáis la noche delante del muro? Si lo hacéis otra vez, os echaré mano. Desde entonces no vinieron en día de reposo.

22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of thy mercy.

22 Y dije a los levitas que se purificasen y fuesen a guardar las puertas, para santificar el día de reposo. También por esto acuérdate de mí, oh Dios mío, y ten piedad de mí según la abundancia de tu misericordia.

23 In those days also saw I Jews that had married wives of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab:

23 Vi asimismo en aquellos días a judíos que habían tomado esposas asdoditas, amonitas y moabitas;

24 And their children spake half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the Jews' language, but according to the language of each people.

24 y la mitad de sus hijos hablaban la lengua de Asdod, porque no sabían hablar judaico, sino que hablaban conforme a la lengua de cada pueblo.

25 And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters unto your sons, or for yourselves.

25 Y contendí con ellos, y los maldije, y golpeé a algunos de ellos, y les arranqué los cabellos y les hice jurar, diciendo: No daréis vuestras hijas a sus hijos, ni tomaréis sus hijas para vuestros hijos ni para vosotros mismos.

26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

26 ¿No pecó por esto Salomón, rey de Israel? Aunque en muchas naciones no hubo rey como él, que era amado por su Dios y Dios lo había hecho rey sobre todo Israel, pero aun a él le hicieron pecar las mujeres extranjeras.

27 Shall we then hearken unto you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives?

27 ¿Y habremos de escucharos a vosotros y cometer todo este mal tan grande de actuar con infidelidad contra nuestro Dios, tomando esposas extranjeras?

28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

28 Y uno de los hijos de Joiada hijo de Eliasib, el sumo sacerdote, era yerno de Sanbalat, el horonita; por tanto, lo eché de mi lado.

29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

29 Acuérdate de ellos, oh Dios mío, porque han contaminado el sacerdocio, y el convenio del sacerdocio y de los levitas.

30 Thus cleansed I them from all strangers, and appointed the wards of the priests and the Levites, every one in his business;

30 Los purifiqué, pues, de todo extranjero y puse a los sacerdotes y a los levitas en sus oficios, a cada uno en su obra;

31 And for the wood offering, at times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good.

31 y para la ofrenda de leña en los tiempos señalados, y para las primicias. ¡Acuérdate de mí, oh Dios mío, para bien!
