1 Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpeh, saying, There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.

1 Y los hombres de Israel habían jurado en Mizpa, diciendo: Ninguno de nosotros dará su hija a los de Benjamín por esposa.

2 And the people came to the house of God, and abode there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore;

2 Y vino el pueblo a la casa de Dios, y estuvieron allí hasta el atardecer delante de Dios; y alzando su voz, lloraron amargamente

3 And said, O LORD God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel?

3 y dijeron: Oh Jehová Dios de Israel, ¿por qué ha sucedido esto en Israel, que falte hoy de Israel una tribu?

4 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings.

4 Y aconteció que al día siguiente, el pueblo se levantó muy de mañana, y edificaron allí un altar y ofrecieron holocaustos y ofrendas de paz.

5 And the children of Israel said, Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up with the congregation unto the LORD? For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up to the LORD to Mizpeh, saying, He shall surely be put to death.

5 Y dijeron los hijos de Israel: ¿Quién de entre todas las tribus de Israel no subió a la asamblea, a Jehová? Porque se había hecho gran juramento contra el que no subiese a Jehová en Mizpa, diciendo: Sufrirá la muerte.

6 And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.

6 Y los hijos de Israel se entristecieron a causa de Benjamín, su hermano, y dijeron: Una tribu es hoy cortada de Israel.

7 How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?

7 ¿Qué haremos en cuanto a conseguir esposas para los que han quedado, ya que hemos jurado por Jehová que no les daremos nuestras hijas por esposas?

8 And they said, What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up to Mizpeh to the LORD? And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.

8 Y dijeron: ¿Hay alguno de las tribus de Israel que no haya subido a Jehová en Mizpa? Y hallaron que ninguno de Jabes-galaad había venido al campamento, a la asamblea.

9 For the people were numbered, and, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there.

9 Porque el pueblo fue contado, y he aquí que no había allí ningún hombre de los moradores de Jabes-galaad.

10 And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying, Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the children.

10 Entonces la congregación envió allá a doce mil hombres de los más valientes, y les mandaron, diciendo: Id y pasad a filo de espada a los moradores de Jabes-galaad, con las mujeres y los niños.

11 And this is the thing that ye shall do, Ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.

11 Pero lo haréis de esta manera: mataréis a todo hombre y a toda mujer que haya conocido varón.

12 And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had known no man by lying with any male: and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.

12 Y hallaron entre los moradores de Jabes-galaad a cuatrocientas doncellas que no habían conocido varón, y las trajeron al campamento en Silo, que está en la tierra de Canaán.

13 And the whole congregation sent some to speak to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock Rimmon, and to call peaceably unto them.

13 Toda la congregación envió un mensaje a los hijos de Benjamín que estaban en la peña de Rimón, y les proclamaron la paz.

14 And Benjamin came again at that time; and they gave them wives which they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead: and yet so they sufficed them not.

14 Y volvieron entonces los de Benjamín, y les dieron por esposas las que habían dejado vivas de las mujeres de Jabes-galaad; mas no había suficientes.

15 And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.

15 Y el pueblo tuvo tristeza a causa de Benjamín, porque Jehová había abierto una brecha en las tribus de Israel.

16 Then the elders of the congregation said, How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?

16 Entonces los ancianos de la congregación dijeron: ¿Qué haremos en cuanto a conseguir esposas para los que han quedado? Porque las mujeres de Benjamín han sido exterminadas.

17 And they said, There must be an inheritance for them that be escaped of Benjamin, that a tribe be not destroyed out of Israel.

17 Y dijeron: Debe haber una heredad para Benjamín de los que han escapado, para que no sea una tribu exterminada de Israel.

18 Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters: for the children of Israel have sworn, saying, Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.

18 Pero nosotros no les podemos dar esposas de nuestras hijas, porque los hijos de Israel han jurado, diciendo: Maldito el que diere esposa a Benjamín.

19 Then they said, Behold, there is a feast of the LORD in Shiloh yearly in a place which is on the north side of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.

19 Ahora bien, dijeron, he aquí, cada año hay una fiesta solemne de Jehová en Silo, que está al norte de Bet-el y al lado oriental del camino que sube de Bet-el a Siquem, y al sur de Lebona.

20 Therefore they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying, Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;

20 Y mandaron a los hijos de Benjamín, diciendo: Id y poned emboscadas en las viñas,

21 And see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.

21 y estad atentos. Y cuando veáis salir a las hijas de Silo a bailar en círculos, salid vosotros de las viñas, y arrebate cada uno esposa para sí de las hijas de Silo, y os iréis a tierra de Benjamín.

22 And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come unto us to complain, that we will say unto them, Be favourable unto them for our sakes: because we reserved not to each man his wife in the war: for ye did not give unto them at this time, that ye should be guilty.

22 Y cuando vengan los padres de ellas o sus hermanos a demandárnoslas, nosotros les diremos: Hacednos la merced de concedérnoslas, pues nosotros en la guerra no tomamos esposas para todos. Ya que vosotros no se las habéis dado, ahora no sois culpables.

23 And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they caught: and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and repaired the cities, and dwelt in them.

23 Y los hijos de Benjamín lo hicieron así y tomaron esposas conforme a su número, raptándolas de entre las que danzaban; y se fueron, y regresaron a su heredad, y reedificaron las ciudades y habitaron en ellas.

24 And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.

24 Entonces los hijos de Israel se fueron también de allí, cada uno a su tribu y a su familia, saliendo de allí cada uno a su heredad.

25 In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

25 En aquellos días no había rey en Israel; cada uno hacía como mejor le parecía.
