1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valour, and he was the son of an harlot: and Gilead begat Jephthah.

1 Y Jefté, el galaadita, era un guerrero valiente, hijo de una ramera, al que había engendrado Galaad.

2 And Gilead's wife bare him sons; and his wife's sons grew up, and they thrust out Jephthah, and said unto him, Thou shalt not inherit in our father's house; for thou art the son of a strange woman.

2 Y la esposa de Galaad también le había dado a luz hijos, los cuales, cuando fueron grandes, echaron fuera a Jefté, diciéndole: No heredarás en la casa de nuestro padre, porque eres hijo de otra mujer.

3 Then Jephthah fled from his brethren, and dwelt in the land of Tob: and there were gathered vain men to Jephthah, and went out with him.

3 Huyó, pues, Jefté de sus hermanos y habitó en la tierra de Tob; y se juntaron con él hombres ociosos, los cuales salían con él.

4 And it came to pass in process of time, that the children of Ammon made war against Israel.

4 Y aconteció que después de cierto tiempo, los hijos de Amón hicieron guerra contra Israel.

5 And it was so, that when the children of Ammon made war against Israel, the elders of Gilead went to fetch Jephthah out of the land of Tob:

5 Y cuando los hijos de Amón pelearon contra Israel, los ancianos de Galaad fueron a traer a Jefté de la tierra de Tob,

6 And they said unto Jephthah, Come, and be our captain, that we may fight with the children of Ammon.

6 y dijeron a Jefté: Ven, y serás nuestro jefe, para que peleemos contra los hijos de Amón.

7 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, Did not ye hate me, and expel me out of my father's house? and why are ye come unto me now when ye are in distress?

7 Y Jefté respondió a los ancianos de Galaad: ¿No me habéis vosotros aborrecido y me echasteis de la casa de mi padre? ¿Por qué, pues, venís ahora a mí cuando estáis en apuros?

8 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, Therefore we turn again to thee now, that thou mayest go with us, and fight against the children of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead.

8 Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: Por esta misma causa volvemos ahora a ti, para que vengas con nosotros, y pelees contra los hijos de Amón y seas caudillo de todos los que moramos en Galaad.

9 And Jephthah said unto the elders of Gilead, If ye bring me home again to fight against the children of Ammon, and the LORD deliver them before me, shall I be your head?

9 Jefté entonces dijo a los ancianos de Galaad: Si me hacéis volver para que pelee contra los hijos de Amón, y Jehová los entrega delante de mí, ¿seré yo vuestro caudillo?

10 And the elders of Gilead said unto Jephthah, The LORD be witness between us, if we do not so according to thy words.

10 Y los ancianos de Galaad respondieron a Jefté: Jehová sea testigo entre nosotros si no hacemos como tú dices.

11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and captain over them: and Jephthah uttered all his words before the LORD in Mizpeh.

11 Entonces Jefté fue con los ancianos de Galaad, y el pueblo lo eligió como su caudillo y jefe; y Jefté habló todas sus palabras delante de Jehová en Mizpa.

12 And Jephthah sent messengers unto the king of the children of Ammon, saying, What hast thou to do with me, that thou art come against me to fight in my land?

12 Y envió Jefté mensajeros al rey de los amonitas, diciendo: ¿Qué tienes tú conmigo que has venido contra mí para hacer la guerra en mi tierra?

13 And the king of the children of Ammon answered unto the messengers of Jephthah, Because Israel took away my land, when they came up out of Egypt, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and unto Jordan: now therefore restore those lands again peaceably.

13 Y el rey de los amonitas respondió a los mensajeros de Jefté: Por cuanto Israel tomó mi tierra, cuando subió de Egipto, desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc y el Jordán; ahora pues, devuélvela en paz.

14 And Jephthah sent messengers again unto the king of the children of Ammon:

14 Y Jefté volvió a enviar a otros mensajeros al rey de los amonitas,

15 And said unto him, Thus saith Jephthah, Israel took not away the land of Moab, nor the land of the children of Ammon:

15 para decirle: Jefté ha dicho así: Israel no tomó tierra de Moab ni tierra de los hijos de Amón.

16 But when Israel came up from Egypt, and walked through the wilderness unto the Red sea, and came to Kadesh;

16 Porque cuando Israel subió de Egipto, anduvo por el desierto hasta el mar Rojo y llegó a Cades.

17 Then Israel sent messengers unto the king of Edom, saying, Let me, I pray thee, pass through thy land: but the king of Edom would not hearken thereto. And in like manner they sent unto the king of Moab: but he would not consent: and Israel abode in Kadesh.

17 Entonces Israel envió mensajeros al rey de Edom, diciendo: Yo te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra. Pero el rey de Edom no los escuchó. Envió también mensajeros al rey de Moab, el cual tampoco quiso; se quedó, por tanto, Israel en Cades.

18 Then they went along through the wilderness, and compassed the land of Edom, and the land of Moab, and came by the east side of the land of Moab, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, but came not within the border of Moab: for Arnon was the border of Moab.

18 Después, yendo por el desierto, rodeó la tierra de Edom y la tierra de Moab, y llegó por el lado oriental de la tierra de Moab, y acamparon al otro lado del Arnón, pero no entraron en el territorio de Moab, porque el Arnón era el límite de Moab.

19 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, the king of Heshbon; and Israel said unto him, Let us pass, we pray thee, through thy land into my place.

19 Y envió Israel mensajeros a Sehón, rey de los amorreos, rey de Hesbón, diciéndole: Te ruego que me dejes pasar por tu tierra hasta mi lugar.

20 But Sihon trusted not Israel to pass through his coast: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and pitched in Jahaz, and fought against Israel.

20 Mas Sehón no se fio de Israel para darle paso por su territorio, sino que reuniendo Sehón a toda su gente, acampó en Jahaza y peleó contra Israel.

21 And the LORD God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they smote them: so Israel possessed all the land of the Amorites, the inhabitants of that country.

21 Pero Jehová, el Dios de Israel, entregó a Sehón y a todo su pueblo en manos de Israel, y los venció; y tomó posesión Israel de toda la tierra de los amorreos que habitaban en aquel país.

22 And they possessed all the coasts of the Amorites, from Arnon even unto Jabbok, and from the wilderness even unto Jordan.

22 Y también tomaron posesión de todo el territorio de los amorreos desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc, y desde el desierto hasta el Jordán.

23 So now the LORD God of Israel hath dispossessed the Amorites from before his people Israel, and shouldest thou possess it?

23 Así que, lo que Jehová, el Dios de Israel, desposeyó a los amorreos delante de su pueblo Israel, ¿lo has de poseer tú?

24 Wilt not thou possess that which Chemosh thy god giveth thee to possess? So whomsoever the LORD our God shall drive out from before us, them will we possess.

24 ¿No poseerás tú lo que Quemos, tu dios, te haga poseer? Así poseeremos nosotros todo aquello que desposeyó Jehová, nuestro Dios, delante de nosotros.

25 And now art thou any thing better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? did he ever strive against Israel, or did he ever fight against them,

25 ¿Eres tú ahora mejor en algo que Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab? ¿Tuvo él alguna contención con Israel o hizo guerra contra ellos?

26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and her towns, and in Aroer and her towns, and in all the cities that be along by the coasts of Arnon, three hundred years? why therefore did ye not recover them within that time?

26 Israel ha estado habitando durante trescientos años en Hesbón y en sus aldeas, en Aroer y en sus aldeas, y en todas las ciudades que están junto al Arnón, ¿por qué no las habéis recuperado en todo ese tiempo?

27 Wherefore I have not sinned against thee, but thou doest me wrong to war against me: the LORD the Judge be judge this day between the children of Israel and the children of Ammon.

27 Así que, yo en nada he pecado contra ti, pero tú haces mal conmigo haciéndome la guerra. Jehová, que es el juez, juzgue hoy entre los hijos de Israel y los hijos de Amón.

28 Howbeit the king of the children of Ammon hearkened not unto the words of Jephthah which he sent him.

28 Mas el rey de los hijos de Amón no atendió a las razones que Jefté le había enviado.

29 Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.

29 Y el espíritu de Jehová vino sobre Jefté, y este pasó por Galaad y Manasés; y de allí pasó a Mizpa de Galaad, y de Mizpa de Galaad pasó a los hijos de Amón.

30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,

30 Y Jefté hizo voto a Jehová, diciendo: Si entregas a los amonitas en mis manos,

31 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD's, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

31 entonces sucederá que cualquiera que salga de las puertas de mi casa a recibirme cuando vuelva en paz de los amonitas, será de Jehová, y lo ofreceré en holocausto.

32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.

32 Pasó, pues, Jefté a donde estaban los hijos de Amón para pelear contra ellos, y Jehová los entregó en sus manos.

33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.

33 Y los derrotó con gran estrago desde Aroer hasta llegar a Minit, veinte ciudades, y hasta la vega de las viñas. Y así fueron sometidos los amonitas delante de los hijos de Israel.

34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.

34 Y volvió Jefté a Mizpa, a su casa, y he aquí que su hija salió a recibirle con panderetas y danzas; y ella era sola, su única hija; fuera de ella no tenía hijo ni hija.

35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.

35 Y aconteció que cuando él la vio, rasgó sus vestidos, diciendo: ¡Ay, hija mía!, en verdad me has abatido y tú misma eres mi aflicción, porque yo he abierto mi boca ante Jehová y no podré retractarme.

36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.

36 Ella entonces le respondió: Padre mío, puesto que has abierto tu boca ante Jehová, haz de mí tal como salió de tu boca, ya que Jehová ha hecho venganza en tus enemigos, los hijos de Amón.

37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.

37 Y ella dijo a su padre: Hágase esto por mí: Déjame por dos meses que vaya y descienda por los montes y llore mi virginidad, yo y mis compañeras.

38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.

38 Y él le dijo: Ve. Y la dejó por dos meses. Y ella fue con sus compañeras y lloró su virginidad por los montes.

39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,

39 Pasados los dos meses, volvió a su padre, y él hizo con ella conforme a su voto que había hecho. Y ella nunca conoció varón. Y se hizo costumbre en Israel

40 That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

40 que de año en año las hijas de Israel fueran a recordar a la hija de Jefté, el galaadita, cuatro días en el año.
