1 I made a covenant with mine eyes; why then should I think upon a maid?

1 Hice convenio con mis ojos; ¿cómo, pues, había yo de pensar en una virgen?

2 For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

2 Porque, ¿qué galardón me daría desde arriba Dios, y qué heredad el Omnipotente desde las alturas?

3 Is not destruction to the wicked? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?

3 ¿No hay calamidad para el injusto e infortunio para los obradores de iniquidad?

4 Doth not he see my ways, and count all my steps?

4 ¿No ve él mis caminos y cuenta todos mis pasos?

5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot hath hasted to deceit;

5 Si he andado con vanidad, y si mi pie se ha apresurado al engaño,

6 Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity.

6 péseme Dios en balanzas de justicia y reconocerá mi integridad.

7 If my step hath turned out of the way, and mine heart walked after mine eyes, and if any blot hath cleaved to mine hands;

7 Si mis pasos se han apartado del camino, y si mi corazón se ha ido tras mis ojos, y si alguna mancha se ha pegado a mis manos,

8 Then let me sow, and let another eat; yea, let my offspring be rooted out.

8 siembre yo, y otro coma, y sea arrancada mi siembra.

9 If mine heart have been deceived by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbour's door;

9 Si ha sido seducido mi corazón por alguna mujer, y si he estado acechando a la puerta de mi prójimo,

10 Then let my wife grind unto another, and let others bow down upon her.

10 muela para otro mi esposa, y sobre ella otros se encorven.

11 For this is an heinous crime; yea, it is an iniquity to be punished by the judges.

11 Porque eso es maldad e iniquidad que han de castigar los jueces.

12 For it is a fire that consumeth to destruction, and would root out all mine increase.

12 Porque es fuego que devoraría hasta el Abadón, y desarraigaría toda mi hacienda.

13 If I did despise the cause of my manservant or of my maidservant, when they contended with me;

13 Si he tenido en poco el derecho de mi siervo y de mi sierva cuando ellos pleiteaban conmigo,

14 What then shall I do when God riseth up? and when he visiteth, what shall I answer him?

14 ¿qué haré yo cuando Dios se levante? Y cuando él me pida cuentas, ¿qué le responderé yo?

15 Did not he that made me in the womb make him? and did not one fashion us in the womb?

15 El que en el vientre me hizo a mí, ¿no lo hizo a él? ¿Y no nos formó uno mismo en la matriz?

16 If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail;

16 Si he estorbado el deseo de los pobres, o si he dejado desfallecer los ojos de la viuda,

17 Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof;

17 o si he comido mi bocado solo, y no ha comido de él el huérfano

18 (For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with a father, and I have guided her from my mother's womb;)

18 (porque desde mi juventud creció conmigo como con un padre, y desde el vientre de mi madre fui guía de la viuda),

19 If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering;

19 si he visto perecer a alguien sin vestido, o a algún menesteroso sin abrigo,

20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

20 si no me han bendecido sus lomos, y si él no se ha calentado con el vellón de mis ovejas,

21 If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, when I saw my help in the gate:

21 si he alzado contra el huérfano mi mano, aun cuando vi que me ayudarían en la puerta,

22 Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder blade, and mine arm be broken from the bone.

22 que mi brazo se caiga de mi hombro, y que se quiebre el hueso de mi brazo.

23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

23 Porque el castigo de Dios ha sido terror para mí, y ante su majestad yo no tendría poder.

24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

24 Si he puesto en el oro mi esperanza o si he dicho al oro fino: Mi confianza eres tú,

25 If I rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because mine hand had gotten much;

25 si me he alegrado de que mi riqueza se multiplicase y de que mi mano hallase mucho,

26 If I beheld the sun when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;

26 si he mirado al sol cuando resplandecía, o a la luna en su esplendor,

27 And my heart hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my hand:

27 y si mi corazón se engañó en secreto, o si mi boca besó mi mano,

28 This also were an iniquity to be punished by the judge: for I should have denied the God that is above.

28 esto también sería maldad digna de juicio, porque habría negado al Dios de lo alto.

29 If I rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him:

29 Si me he alegrado con la ruina del que me aborrecía y me he regocijado cuando le halló el mal

30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by wishing a curse to his soul.

30 (aun cuando no he entregado al pecado mi boca, pidiendo maldición para su alma),

31 If the men of my tabernacle said not, Oh that we had of his flesh! we cannot be satisfied.

31 si los hombres de mi tienda no decían: ¿Quién hallará a alguno que no se haya saciado con su carne?

32 The stranger did not lodge in the street: but I opened my doors to the traveller.

32 (el extranjero no pasaba fuera la noche, pues mis puertas abría al caminante);

33 If I covered my transgressions as Adam, by hiding mine iniquity in my bosom:

33 si como Adán he encubierto mis transgresiones, escondiendo en mi seno mi iniquidad,

34 Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of the door?

34 porque temía a la gran multitud, y el menosprecio de las familias me aterrorizaba, y callé y no salí de mi puerta.

35 Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a book.

35 ¡Quién me diera quien me oyese! He aquí, mi marca. ¡Que el Omnipotente me responda, y que mi adversario me haga un escrito!

36 Surely I would take it upon my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me.

36 Ciertamente yo lo llevaría sobre mi hombro, y me lo ceñiría como una corona.

37 I would declare unto him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near unto him.

37 Yo le contaría el número de mis pasos; como príncipe me acercaría a él.

38 If my land cry against me, or that the furrows likewise thereof complain;

38 Si mi tierra clama contra mí, y lloran todos sus surcos;

39 If I have eaten the fruits thereof without money, or have caused the owners thereof to lose their life:

39 si he comido su sustancia sin dinero, o si he hecho expirar el alma de sus dueños,

40 Let thistles grow instead of wheat, and cockle instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.

40 en lugar de trigo broten abrojos, y espinos en lugar de cebada.
