1 Then answered Eliphaz the Temanite, and said,

1 Y respondió Elifaz, el temanita, y dijo:

2 Should a wise man utter vain knowledge, and fill his belly with the east wind?

2 ¿Responderá el sabio con vano conocimiento, y llenará su vientre de viento solano?

3 Should he reason with unprofitable talk? or with speeches wherewith he can do no good?

3 ¿Disputará con palabras inútiles y con razones sin provecho?

4 Yea, thou castest off fear, and restrainest prayer before God.

4 Tú también disipas el temor y menoscabas la oración delante de Dios.

5 For thy mouth uttereth thine iniquity, and thou choosest the tongue of the crafty.

5 Porque tu boca enseña tu iniquidad, pues has escogido el hablar de los astutos.

6 Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I: yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

6 Tu propia boca te condenará, y no yo; y tus propios labios testificarán contra ti.

7 Art thou the first man that was born? or wast thou made before the hills?

7 ¿Fuiste tú el primer hombre en nacer? ¿O fuiste formado antes que los collados?

8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?

8 ¿Oíste tú el secreto de Dios y retienes solo para ti la sabiduría?

9 What knowest thou, that we know not? what understandest thou, which is not in us?

9 ¿Qué sabes tú que no sepamos nosotros? ¿Qué entiendes tú que no se halle en nosotros?

10 With us are both the grayheaded and very aged men, much elder than thy father.

10 Entre nosotros también hay canosos; también hay ancianos mucho más avanzados en días que tu padre.

11 Are the consolations of God small with thee? is there any secret thing with thee?

11 ¿En tan poco tienes las consolaciones de Dios, y las palabras que con dulzura se te dicen?

12 Why doth thine heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes wink at,

12 ¿Por qué te arrebata tu corazón, y por qué guiñan tus ojos,

13 That thou turnest thy spirit against God, and lettest such words go out of thy mouth?

13 para que contra Dios vuelvas tu espíritu y saques tales palabras de tu boca?

14 What is man, that he should be clean? and he which is born of a woman, that he should be righteous?

14 ¿Qué cosa es el hombre para que sea limpio, y para que sea justo el nacido de mujer?

15 Behold, he putteth no trust in his saints; yea, the heavens are not clean in his sight.

15 He aquí que en sus santos no confía, ni aun los cielos son puros delante de sus ojos;

16 How much more abominable and filthy is man, which drinketh iniquity like water?

16 ¡cuánto menos el hombre abominable y vil que bebe la iniquidad como agua!

17 I will shew thee, hear me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

17 Escúchame, pues yo te mostraré y te contaré lo que he visto,

18 Which wise men have told from their fathers, and have not hid it:

18 lo que los sabios nos contaron de sus padres, y no lo encubrieron;

19 Unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

19 a ellos solos les fue dada la tierra, y no pasó extraño por en medio de ellos.

20 The wicked man travaileth with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden to the oppressor.

20 Todos sus días el malvado es atormentado de dolor, y un cierto número de años es reservado para el violento.

21 A dreadful sound is in his ears: in prosperity the destroyer shall come upon him.

21 Estruendos espantosos hay en sus oídos; en la prosperidad el destructor vendrá sobre él.

22 He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is waited for of the sword.

22 Él no cree que volverá de las tinieblas, y destinado está para la espada.

23 He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

23 Vaga errante tras el pan, diciendo: ¿Dónde está? Sabe que le está preparado el día de tinieblas.

24 Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

24 Tribulación y angustia le aterran, y prevalecen contra él como un rey dispuesto para la batalla.

25 For he stretcheth out his hand against God, and strengtheneth himself against the Almighty.

25 Porque él extendió su mano contra Dios, y se portó con soberbia contra el Todopoderoso.

26 He runneth upon him, even on his neck, upon the thick bosses of his bucklers:

26 Corre contra él con el cuello erguido, con lo grueso de las salientes de su escudo.

27 Because he covereth his face with his fatness, and maketh collops of fat on his flanks.

27 Porque la gordura cubrió su rostro e hizo pliegues en su vientre;

28 And he dwelleth in desolate cities, and in houses which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to become heaps.

28 y habitará en las ciudades asoladas, en las casas inhabitadas, que están a punto de convertirse en ruinas.

29 He shall not be rich, neither shall his substance continue, neither shall he prolong the perfection thereof upon the earth.

29 No se enriquecerá, ni durarán sus bienes, ni extenderá por la tierra sus posesiones.

30 He shall not depart out of darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth shall he go away.

30 No escapará de las tinieblas; la llama secará sus ramas, y con el aliento de su boca perecerá.

31 Let not him that is deceived trust in vanity: for vanity shall be his recompence.

31 No confíe el iluso en la vanidad, porque ella será su recompensa.

32 It shall be accomplished before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

32 Esta se cumplirá antes de su tiempo, y sus renuevos no reverdecerán.

33 He shall shake off his unripe grape as the vine, and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

33 Como la vid, perderá sus uvas antes de madurar y esparcirá su flor como el olivo.

34 For the congregation of hypocrites shall be desolate, and fire shall consume the tabernacles of bribery.

34 Porque el estar en compañía de los impíos es estéril, y el fuego consumirá las tiendas del soborno.

35 They conceive mischief, and bring forth vanity, and their belly prepareth deceit.

35 Conciben maldad y dan a luz iniquidad, y en sus entrañas traman engaño.
