1 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying,

1 La palabra de Jehová que vino a Jeremías, diciendo:

2 Arise, and go down to the potter's house, and there I will cause thee to hear my words.

2 Levántate y desciende a casa del alfarero, y allí te haré oír mis palabras.

3 Then I went down to the potter's house, and, behold, he wrought a work on the wheels.

3 Y descendí a casa del alfarero, y he aquí que él hacía un trabajo sobre la rueda.

4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.

4 Y la vasija de barro que él hacía se echó a perder en manos del alfarero; y volvió e hizo de ella otra vasija, según le pareció mejor al alfarero hacerla.

5 Then the word of the LORD came to me, saying,

5 Entonces vino a mí la palabra de Jehová, diciendo:

6 O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are ye in mine hand, O house of Israel.

6 ¿No podré yo hacer de vosotros como este alfarero, oh casa de Israel?, dice Jehová. He aquí que como el barro en la mano del alfarero, así sois vosotros en mi mano, oh casa de Israel.

7 At what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to pluck up, and to pull down, and to destroy it;

7 En un instante hablaré contra una nación y contra un reino, para arrancar, y derribar y destruir.

8 If that nation, against whom I have pronounced, turn from their evil, I will repent of the evil that I thought to do unto them.

8 Pero si esa nación contra la que he hablado se vuelve de su maldad, yo me arrepentiré del mal que había pensado hacerles.

9 And at what instant I shall speak concerning a nation, and concerning a kingdom, to build and to plant it;

9 Y en un instante hablaré de la nación y del reino, para edificar y para plantar;

10 If it do evil in my sight, that it obey not my voice, then I will repent of the good, wherewith I said I would benefit them.

10 pero si hace lo malo delante de mis ojos, no escuchando mi voz, me arrepentiré del bien que había determinado hacerle.

11 Now therefore go to, speak to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I frame evil against you, and devise a device against you: return ye now every one from his evil way, and make your ways and your doings good.

11 Ahora, pues, habla a todo hombre de Judá y a los moradores de Jerusalén, diciendo: Así ha dicho Jehová: He aquí que yo dispongo mal contra vosotros y tramo contra vosotros designios; vuélvase ahora cada uno de su mal camino, y mejorad vuestros caminos y vuestras obras.

12 And they said, There is no hope: but we will walk after our own devices, and we will every one do the imagination of his evil heart.

12 Y dijeron: Es en vano, porque en pos de nuestros propios planes iremos, y hará cada uno conforme a la imaginación de su malvado corazón.

13 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Ask ye now among the heathen, who hath heard such things: the virgin of Israel hath done a very horrible thing.

13 Por tanto, así ha dicho Jehová: Preguntad ahora entre las naciones quién ha oído cosa semejante. Algo muy horrible ha hecho la virgen de Israel.

14 Will a man leave the snow of Lebanon which cometh from the rock of the field? or shall the cold flowing waters that come from another place be forsaken?

14 ¿Faltará la nieve de los peñascos del Líbano? ¿Se agotarán las aguas frías que corren de lejanas tierras?

15 Because my people hath forgotten me, they have burned incense to vanity, and they have caused them to stumble in their ways from the ancient paths, to walk in paths, in a way not cast up;

15 Porque los de mi pueblo me han olvidado, quemando incienso a lo que es vanidad; esto les ha hecho tropezar en sus caminos, en las sendas antiguas, para caminar por sendas, por camino no bien preparado,

16 To make their land desolate, and a perpetual hissing; every one that passeth thereby shall be astonished, and wag his head.

16 convirtiendo su tierra en desolación y en objeto de burla perpetua. Todo aquel que pase por ella se maravillará y meneará la cabeza.

17 I will scatter them as with an east wind before the enemy; I will shew them the back, and not the face, in the day of their calamity.

17 Como viento del este los esparciré delante del enemigo; les mostraré la espalda y no el rostro, en el día de su calamidad.

18 Then said they, Come, and let us devise devices against Jeremiah; for the law shall not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor the word from the prophet. Come, and let us smite him with the tongue, and let us not give heed to any of his words.

18 Y dijeron: Venid y tramemos un plan contra Jeremías, porque la ley no le faltará al sacerdote, ni el consejo al sabio ni la palabra al profeta. Venid e hirámoslo con la lengua, y no hagamos caso a ninguna de sus palabras.

19 Give heed to me, O LORD, and hearken to the voice of them that contend with me.

19 ¡Oh Jehová, atiéndeme!, y oye la voz de los que contienden conmigo.

20 Shall evil be recompensed for good? for they have digged a pit for my soul. Remember that I stood before thee to speak good for them, and to turn away thy wrath from them.

20 ¿Se da mal por bien? Pues han cavado un hoyo para mi alma. Acuérdate de que me puse delante de ti para hablar bien en favor de ellos, para apartar de ellos tu ira.

21 Therefore deliver up their children to the famine, and pour out their blood by the force of the sword; and let their wives be bereaved of their children, and be widows; and let their men be put to death; let their young men be slain by the sword in battle.

21 Por tanto, entrega sus hijos al hambre, y entrégalos al poder de la espada; y queden sus esposas privadas de hijos y viudas; y sus maridos sean puestos a muerte, y sus jóvenes heridos a filo de espada en la guerra.

22 Let a cry be heard from their houses, when thou shalt bring a troop suddenly upon them: for they have digged a pit to take me, and hid snares for my feet.

22 Óigase el clamor de sus casas cuando de repente traigas tropas sobre ellos, porque han cavado un hoyo para prenderme, y para mis pies han escondido trampas.

23 Yet, LORD, thou knowest all their counsel against me to slay me: forgive not their iniquity, neither blot out their sin from thy sight, but let them be overthrown before thee; deal thus with them in the time of thine anger.

23 Pero tú, oh Jehová, conoces todo su consejo contra mí para darme muerte; no perdones su iniquidad ni borres su pecado de delante de tu rostro; sean derribados delante de ti; haz así con ellos en el tiempo de tu furor.
