1 Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity builded the temple unto the LORD God of Israel;

1 Y cuando oyeron los enemigos de Judá y de Benjamín que los que habían regresado de la cautividad reedificaban el templo de Jehová Dios de Israel,

2 Then they came to Zerubbabel, and to the chief of the fathers, and said unto them, Let us build with you: for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto him since the days of Esar-haddon king of Assur, which brought us up hither.

2 se acercaron a Zorobabel y a los jefes de las casas paternas y les dijeron: Permitidnos edificar con vosotros, porque, como vosotros, buscamos a vuestro Dios y a él ofrecemos sacrificios desde los días de Esar-hadón, rey de Asiria, que nos trajo aquí.

3 But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.

3 Y les dijeron Zorobabel y Jesúa y los demás jefes de las casas paternas de Israel: No tenéis parte con nosotros para edificar una casa a nuestro Dios, sino que nosotros solos la edificaremos a Jehová Dios de Israel, como nos mandó el rey Ciro, rey de Persia.

4 Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

4 Pero el pueblo de aquella tierra debilitó las manos del pueblo de Judá y los atribulaban durante la construcción.

5 And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

5 Sobornaron además contra ellos a algunos consejeros para frustrar su propósito todos los días de Ciro, rey de Persia, y hasta el reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.

6 And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

6 Y en el reinado de Asuero, al principio de su reinado, escribieron una acusación contra los habitantes de Judá y de Jerusalén.

7 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.

7 Y en los días de Artajerjes, Bislam, Mitrídates, Tabeel y sus demás compañeros, escribieron a Artajerjes, rey de Persia; y la carta estaba escrita en arameo y traducida al arameo.

8 Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort:

8 El comandante Rehum y el escriba Simsai escribieron una carta contra Jerusalén al rey Artajerjes, como sigue:

9 Then wrote Rehum the chancellor, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinaites, the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Susanchites, the Dehavites, and the Elamites,

9 El comandante Rehum, y el escriba Simsai y sus demás compañeros, los jueces, y los gobernadores, los oficiales, los afarseos, los erequeos, los babilonios, los susaneos, los dieveos, los elamitas,

10 And the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and the rest that are on this side the river, and at such a time.

10 y los demás pueblos que el grande y glorioso Asnapar llevó cautivos e hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria y los demás del otro lado del río.

11 This is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king; Thy servants the men on this side the river, and at such a time.

11 Esta es la copia de la carta que enviaron: Al rey Artajerjes: Tus siervos del otro lado del río: Y ahora,

12 Be it known unto the king, that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem, building the rebellious and the bad city, and have set up the walls thereof, and joined the foundations.

12 sepa el rey que los judíos que subieron de ti a nosotros vinieron a Jerusalén; reedifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y han erigido los muros y echado los cimientos.

13 Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls set up again, then will they not pay toll, tribute, and custom, and so thou shalt endamage the revenue of the kings.

13 Sepa ahora el rey que si aquella ciudad es reedificada y los muros son levantados, no pagarán tributo, ni impuestos ni rentas; y el ingreso de los reyes será menoscabado.

14 Now because we have maintenance from the king's palace, and it was not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and certified the king;

14 Puesto que nos mantienen desde el palacio, no nos parece digno ver que el rey sea menospreciado; por lo cual, hemos enviado a hacerlo saber al rey,

15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time: for which cause was this city destroyed.

15 para que se busque en el libro de las memorias de nuestros padres; y hallarás en el libro de las memorias y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, y perjudicial a los reyes y a las provincias, y que de tiempo antiguo en ella se han fomentado rebeliones; por ese motivo esta ciudad fue destruida.

16 We certify the king that, if this city be builded again, and the walls thereof set up, by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river.

16 Hacemos saber al rey que si se reedifica esta ciudad y se levantan sus muros, la región del otro lado del río no será tuya.

17 Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the river, Peace, and at such a time.

17 El rey envió respuesta al comandante Rehum, y al escriba Simsai, y a sus demás compañeros que habitan en Samaria y a los demás del otro lado del río: Paz. Y ahora,

18 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

18 la carta que nos enviasteis fue leída claramente delante de mí.

19 And I commanded, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

19 Y ordené que se investigara, y hallaron que aquella ciudad se ha levantado desde tiempo antiguo contra los reyes, y que en ella se han fomentado rebeliones e insurrecciones,

20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, which have ruled over all countries beyond the river; and toll, tribute, and custom, was paid unto them.

20 y que hubo en Jerusalén reyes fuertes, cuyo dominio se extendía a todo lo que hay al otro lado del río, y que se les pagaba tributo, impuestos y rentas.

21 Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until another commandment shall be given from me.

21 Ahora, pues, dad orden que cesen aquellos hombres, y no sea esa ciudad reedificada hasta que por mí sea dada nueva orden.

22 Take heed now that ye fail not to do this: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

22 Y mirad que no seáis negligentes en esto; ¿por qué habrá de crecer el daño en perjuicio de los reyes?

23 Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

23 Entonces, cuando la copia de la carta del rey Artajerjes fue leída delante de Rehum, y del escriba Simsai y de sus compañeros, fueron apresuradamente a Jerusalén, a los judíos, y con poder y fuerza les hicieron cesar la obra.

24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem. So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

24 Cesó entonces la obra de la casa de Dios que estaba en Jerusalén, y quedó suspendida hasta el segundo año del reinado de Darío, rey de Persia.
