1 Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.

1 Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que entraron en Egipto con Jacob; cada uno entró con su familia:

2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

2 Rubén, Simeón, Leví y Judá;

3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

3 Isacar, Zabulón y Benjamín;

4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

4 Dan, y Neftalí, Gad y Aser.

5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

5 Y todas las almas de los que salieron de los lomos de Jacob fueron setenta. Y José ya estaba en Egipto.

6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

6 Y murieron José y todos sus hermanos y toda aquella generación.

7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

7 Y los hijos de Israel fructificaron y se multiplicaron, y fueron aumentados y fortalecidos en extremo, y la tierra se llenó de ellos.

8 Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

8 Entretanto se levantó un nuevo rey sobre Egipto que no conocía a José,

9 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

9 el cual dijo a su pueblo: He aquí, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es mayor y más fuerte que nosotros.

10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.

10 Ahora, pues, seamos sabios para con él, para que no se multiplique, y acontezca que, en caso de guerra, él también se una a nuestros enemigos, y pelee contra nosotros y se vaya de esta tierra.

11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

11 Entonces pusieron sobre ellos capataces que los oprimiesen con sus cargas; y edificaron para Faraón las ciudades de almacenaje, Pitón y Ramesés.

12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

12 Pero cuanto más los oprimían, tanto más se multiplicaban y crecían, de modo que los egipcios estaban fastidiados con los hijos de Israel.

13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:

13 Y los egipcios hicieron servir a los hijos de Israel con dureza,

14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in mortar, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

14 y amargaron su vida con dura servidumbre, en hacer barro y ladrillo, y en toda labor del campo y en todo su servicio, al cual los obligaban con rigor.

15 And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:

15 Y habló el rey de Egipto a las parteras de las hebreas, una de las cuales se llamaba Sifra y la otra Fúa,

16 And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

16 y les dijo: Cuando asistáis a las hebreas en sus partos y miréis sobre el lecho de parto, si es hijo, matadlo; y si es hija, entonces que viva.

17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

17 Mas las parteras temieron a Dios y no hicieron como les mandó el rey de Egipto, sino que preservaron la vida a los niños.

18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

18 Y el rey de Egipto hizo llamar a las parteras y les dijo: ¿Por qué habéis hecho esto, que habéis preservado la vida a los niños?

19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

19 Y las parteras respondieron a Faraón: Porque las mujeres hebreas no son como las egipcias, pues son robustas y dan a luz antes que la partera venga a ellas.

20 Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

20 Y Dios hizo bien a las parteras; y el pueblo se multiplicó y se fortaleció en gran manera.

21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

21 Y sucedió que, por haber las parteras temido a Dios, él les hizo casas.

22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.

22 Entonces Faraón mandó a todo su pueblo, diciendo: Echad al río a todo hijo que nazca, y a toda hija preservad la vida.
