1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:

1 Hay un mal que he visto debajo del sol, y que es muy común entre los hombres:

2 A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

2 El del hombre a quien Dios ha dado riquezas, y bienes y honra, y nada le falta de todo lo que su alma desea; pero Dios no le ha dado facultad para disfrutar de ello, sino que lo disfrutan los extraños. Esto es vanidad y penosa enfermedad.

3 If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

3 Si un hombre engendra cien hijos, y vive muchos años y los días de su edad son numerosos, pero su alma no se ha llenado del bien y además carece de sepultura, yo digo que el que nace muerto es mejor que él.

4 For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

4 Porque en vano vino y a las tinieblas va, y con tinieblas será cubierto su nombre.

5 Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.

5 Aunque no haya visto el sol ni conocido nada, más reposo tiene este que aquel.

6 Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?

6 Porque si vive aquel mil años dos veces, sin gustar del bien, ¿no van todos al mismo lugar?

7 All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.

7 Todo el trabajo del hombre es para su boca, y con todo eso su alma no se sacia.

8 For what hath the wise more than the fool? what hath the poor, that knoweth to walk before the living?

8 Porque, ¿qué más tiene el sabio que el necio? ¿Qué más tiene el pobre que supo caminar entre los vivientes?

9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of the desire: this is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

9 Más vale lo que ven los ojos que un deseo que pasa. Y también esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

10 That which hath been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

10 Lo que es ya tiene nombre, y se sabe lo que es el hombre, y que no podrá contender con el que es más fuerte que él.

11 Seeing there be many things that increase vanity, what is man the better?

11 Ciertamente las muchas palabras multiplican la vanidad. ¿Qué ventaja tiene el hombre?

12 For who knoweth what is good for man in this life, all the days of his vain life which he spendeth as a shadow? for who can tell a man what shall be after him under the sun?

12 Porque, ¿quién sabe cuál es el bien del hombre en la vida, todos los días de su vana vida, los cuales él pasa como sombra? Porque, ¿quién le dirá al hombre lo que acontecerá después de él debajo del sol?
