1 I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.

1 Dije yo en mi corazón: Ve ahora, te probaré con la alegría, y gozarás de lo bueno. Mas he aquí esto también era vanidad.

2 I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?

2 De la risa dije: Es locura; y de la alegría: ¿De qué sirve esto?

3 I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.

3 Propuse en mi corazón agasajar mi cuerpo con vino y, mientras mi corazón me guiaba con sabiduría, retener al mismo tiempo la necedad, hasta ver cuál es el bien que los hijos de los hombres hacen debajo del cielo en los contados días de su vida.

4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:

4 Engrandecí mis obras, me edifiqué casas, planté viñas,

5 I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:

5 me hice huertos y jardines y planté en ellos toda clase de árboles frutales.

6 I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:

6 Me hice estanques de agua para regar el bosque donde crecían los árboles.

7 I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:

7 Adquirí siervos y siervas, y tuve siervos nacidos en casa; también tuve gran posesión de vacas y de ovejas, más que todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalén.

8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

8 Reuní también para mí plata y oro, y tesoro preciado de reyes y de provincias; me hice de cantores y cantoras, y de los deleites de los hijos de los hombres y de toda clase de instrumentos musicales.

9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.

9 Y fui engrandecido y prosperé más que todos los que fueron antes de mí en Jerusalén; además de esto, permaneció conmigo mi sabiduría.

10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labour: and this was my portion of all my labour.

10 No negué a mis ojos ninguna cosa que desearan, ni aparté mi corazón de placer alguno, porque mi corazón se gozaba de todo mi trabajo; y esta fue la recompensa de toda mi labor.

11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.

11 Miré yo luego todas las obras que habían hecho mis manos y el trabajo que me tomé para hacer las; y he aquí, todo era vanidad y aflicción de espíritu, y sin provecho debajo del sol.

12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been already done.

12 Después volví yo a mirar para ver la sabiduría, y los desvaríos y la necedad; porque, ¿qué podrá hacer el hombre que venga después del rey, sino lo que ya se ha hecho?

13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.

13 Y he visto que la sabiduría sobrepuja a la necedad, así como la luz a las tinieblas.

14 The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all.

14 El sabio tiene sus ojos en su cabeza, mas el necio anda en tinieblas; pero también entendí yo que lo mismo acaecerá tanto al uno como al otro.

15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.

15 Entonces dije yo en mi corazón: Lo que sucederá al necio me sucederá también a mí. ¿De qué, pues, me ha servido ser más sabio? Y dije en mi corazón que también esto era vanidad.

16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

16 Porque ni del sabio ni del necio habrá memoria para siempre, pues en los días venideros ya todo será olvidado. Y morirá el sabio igual que el necio.

17 Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

17 Aborrecí, por tanto, la vida, porque la obra que se hace debajo del sol me era fastidiosa; por cuanto todo es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.

18 Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

18 Asimismo aborrecí todo mi trabajo que había hecho debajo del sol, el cual habré de dejar a otro que vendrá después de mí.

19 And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

19 ¿Y quién sabe si él será sabio o necio? Sin embargo, él se enseñoreará de todo mi trabajo en el que yo me afané y en el que ocupé mi sabiduría debajo del sol. Esto también es vanidad.

20 Therefore I went about to cause my heart to despair of all the labour which I took under the sun.

20 Volvió, por tanto, a desesperanzarse mi corazón acerca de todo el trabajo en el que me afané debajo del sol.

21 For there is a man whose labour is in wisdom, and in knowledge, and in equity; yet to a man that hath not laboured therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil.

21 A veces hay un hombre que ha trabajado con sabiduría, y con conocimiento y con destreza, y tiene que dar sus bienes a otro que nunca trabajó en ello; también esto es vanidad y un gran mal.

22 For what hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun?

22 Porque, ¿qué gana el hombre de todo su trabajo y de la fatiga de su corazón con el que él se afana debajo del sol?

23 For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. This is also vanity.

23 Porque todos sus días no son sino dolores, y es penoso su trabajo; aun de noche su corazón no reposa. Esto también es vanidad.

24 There is nothing better for a man, than that he should eat and drink, and that he should make his soul enjoy good in his labour. This also I saw, that it was from the hand of God.

24 No hay cosa mejor para el hombre sino que coma y beba, y que su alma vea lo bueno de su trabajo. También yo he visto que esto es de la mano de Dios.

25 For who can eat, or who else can hasten hereunto, more than I?

25 Porque, ¿quién comerá y quién se alegrará mejor que yo?

26 For God giveth to a man that is good in his sight wisdom, and knowledge, and joy: but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that is good before God. This also is vanity and vexation of spirit.

26 Porque al hombre que le agrada, Dios le da sabiduría, y conocimiento y gozo; pero al pecador le da el trabajo de recoger y amontonar para darlo al que agrada a Dios. También esto es vanidad y aflicción de espíritu.
