1 And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

1 Después de esto, aconteció que murió el rey de los hijos de Amón, y reinó su hijo Hanún en su lugar.

2 Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

2 Y dijo David: Yo haré misericordia con Hanún hijo de Nahas, como su padre la hizo conmigo. Y envió David sus siervos para consolarlo por su padre. Y los siervos de David llegaron a la tierra de los hijos de Amón,

3 And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

3 pero los príncipes de los hijos de Amón dijeron a Hanún, su señor: ¿Te parece que por honrar David a tu padre te ha enviado consoladores? ¿No ha enviado David sus siervos a ti para reconocer e inspeccionar la ciudad, para destruirla?

4 Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

4 Entonces Hanún tomó a los siervos de David, y les rapó la mitad de la barba, y les cortó los vestidos por la mitad, hasta las nalgas, y los despidió.

5 When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

5 Cuando le avisaron a David, envió a encontrarlos, porque ellos estaban en extremo avergonzados; y el rey les mandó decir: Quedaos en Jericó hasta que os vuelva a crecer la barba, y entonces volved.

6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men.

6 Y viendo los hijos de Amón que se habían hecho odiosos a David, enviaron los hijos de Amón y tomaron a sueldo a los sirios de Bet-rehob y a los sirios de Soba, veinte mil hombres de a pie; y del rey de Maaca, mil hombres, y de Is-tob, doce mil hombres.

7 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

7 Cuando oyó David esto, envió a Joab con todo el ejército de los valientes.

8 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ish-tob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

8 Y los hijos de Amón salieron y se pusieron en orden de batalla a la entrada de la puerta; pero los sirios de Soba, y de Rehob, y de Is-tob y de Maaca estaban aparte en el campo.

9 When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:

9 Al ver Joab que la batalla se le presentaba delante y detrás de él, eligió a algunos de entre los escogidos de Israel y se puso en orden de batalla contra los sirios.

10 And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.

10 Entregó luego el resto del ejército en manos de Abisai, su hermano, y lo puso en orden de batalla frente a los amonitas.

11 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.

11 Y dijo: Si los sirios son más fuertes que yo, tú me ayudarás; y si los hijos de Amón son más fuertes que tú, yo te daré ayuda.

12 Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.

12 Esfuérzate, y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y haga Jehová lo que bien le parezca.

13 And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.

13 Y se acercó Joab, y el pueblo que con él estaba, para pelear contra los sirios, pero ellos huyeron delante de él.

14 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

14 Entonces los hijos de Amón, viendo que los sirios habían huido, huyeron también delante de Abisai y entraron en la ciudad. Y se volvió Joab de luchar contra los hijos de Amón, y vino a Jerusalén.

15 And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

15 Y cuando vieron los sirios que habían caído delante de Israel, se volvieron a reunir.

16 And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

16 Y envió Hadar-ezer e hizo salir a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del río, los cuales vinieron a Helam; y Sobac, general del ejército de Hadar-ezer, iba al frente de ellos.

17 And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

17 Y cuando le avisaron a David, reunió a todo Israel, y pasando el Jordán, llegó a Helam; y los sirios se pusieron en orden de batalla contra David y pelearon contra él.

18 And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.

18 Pero los sirios huyeron delante de Israel; y David mató de los sirios a la gente de setecientos carros y a cuarenta mil hombres de a caballo, e hirió también a Sobac, general del ejército, quien murió allí.

19 And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.

19 Y cuando todos los reyes que ayudaban a Hadar-ezer vieron que habían sido derrotados delante de Israel, hicieron la paz con Israel y le sirvieron; y de allí en adelante, los sirios temieron seguir ayudando a los hijos de Amón.
