1 And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

1 Y llegaba la palabra de Samuel a todo Israel. Por aquel tiempo salió Israel en batalla al encuentro de los filisteos y acampó junto a Eben-ezer, y los filisteos acamparon en Afec.

2 And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

2 Y los filisteos presentaron batalla a Israel, y trabándose el combate, Israel fue vencido delante de los filisteos, los cuales hirieron en el campo de batalla como a cuatro mil hombres.

3 And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

3 Y cuando volvió el pueblo al campamento, los ancianos de Israel dijeron: ¿Por qué nos ha herido hoy Jehová delante de los filisteos? Traigamos de Silo el arca del convenio de Jehová, para que, estando entre nosotros, nos salve de la mano de nuestros enemigos.

4 So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

4 Y el pueblo envió a Silo, y trajeron de allá el arca del convenio de Jehová de los ejércitos, que está entre los querubines; y los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees, estaban allí con el arca del convenio de Dios.

5 And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

5 Y aconteció que cuando el arca del convenio de Jehová llegó al campamento, todo Israel gritó con tan gran júbilo que la tierra tembló.

6 And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

6 Y cuando los filisteos oyeron la voz de júbilo, dijeron: ¿Qué voz de gran júbilo es esta en el campamento de los hebreos? Y supieron que el arca de Jehová había sido traída al campamento.

7 And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

7 Y los filisteos tuvieron miedo, porque decían: Ha venido Dios al campamento. Y dijeron: ¡Ay de nosotros!, pues hasta ahora no ha sido así.

8 Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

8 ¡Ay de nosotros! ¿Quién nos librará de manos de estos dioses poderosos? Estos son los dioses que hirieron a Egipto con toda clase de plagas en el desierto.

9 Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

9 Esforzaos, oh filisteos, y sed hombres, para que no sirváis a los hebreos, como ellos os han servido a vosotros; sed hombres y pelead.

10 And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

10 Pelearon, pues, los filisteos, e Israel fue vencido, y huyó cada cual a su tienda; y hubo una gran mortandad, pues cayeron de Israel treinta mil hombres de a pie.

11 And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

11 Y el arca de Dios fue tomada, y murieron los dos hijos de Elí, Ofni y Finees.

12 And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

12 Y corriendo de la batalla un hombre de Benjamín, llegó aquel día a Silo, rotos sus vestidos y tierra sobre su cabeza.

13 And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

13 Y cuando llegó, he aquí, Elí estaba sentado en una silla vigilando junto al camino, porque su corazón estaba temblando por causa del arca de Dios. Llegó, pues, aquel hombre a la ciudad, y al dar las nuevas, toda la ciudad gritó.

14 And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.

14 Y cuando Elí oyó el estruendo de la gritería, dijo: ¿Qué estruendo de alboroto es este? Y aquel hombre vino deprisa y le dio las nuevas a Elí.

15 Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.

15 Era ya Elí de edad de noventa y ocho años, y sus ojos se habían oscurecido, de modo que no podía ver.

16 And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?

16 Dijo, pues, aquel hombre a Elí: Yo vengo de la batalla; he escapado hoy del combate. Y Elí dijo: ¿Qué ha acontecido, hijo mío?

17 And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

17 Y el mensajero respondió y dijo: Israel huyó delante de los filisteos, y también hubo una gran mortandad entre el pueblo; y también tus dos hijos, Ofni y Finees, han muerto, y el arca de Dios fue tomada.

18 And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

18 Y aconteció que cuando él hizo mención del arca de Dios, Elí cayó de la silla hacia atrás al lado de la puerta, y se desnucó y murió, porque era hombre anciano y pesaba mucho. Y había juzgado a Israel cuarenta años.

19 And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

19 Y su nuera, la mujer de Finees, que estaba encinta, cercana al parto, al oír el rumor de que el arca de Dios había sido tomada y que su suegro y su marido habían muerto, se inclinó y dio a luz, porque le sobrevinieron sus dolores.

20 And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

20 Y al tiempo que moría, le decían las que estaban junto a ella: No tengas temor, porque has dado a luz un hijo. Mas ella no respondió ni prestó atención.

21 And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

21 Y llamó al niño Icabod, diciendo: ¡Desterrada ha sido la gloria de Israel!, porque el arca de Dios ha sido tomada, y porque habían muerto su suegro y su marido.

22 And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.

22 Dijo, pues: Desterrada ha sido la gloria de Israel, porque el arca de Dios ha sido tomada.
