1 Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead.

1 Después de estas cosas aconteció que murió Nahas, rey de los hijos de Amón, y reinó en su lugar su hijo.

2 And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.

2 Y dijo David: Haré misericordia con Hanún hijo de Nahas, porque también su padre hizo conmigo misericordia. Así David envió mensajeros para que lo consolasen por la muerte de su padre. Pero cuando llegaron los siervos de David a la tierra de los hijos de Amón para consolar a Hanún,

3 But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land?

3 los príncipes de los hijos de Amón dijeron a Hanún: ¿Crees tú que David honra a tu padre porque te ha enviado consoladores? ¿No vienen más bien sus siervos a ti para reconocer, y someter y espiar la tierra?

4 Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.

4 Entonces Hanún tomó a los siervos de David y los rapó, y les cortó los vestidos por la mitad, hasta las nalgas, y los despidió.

5 Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

5 Y algunos fueron y le dieron la nueva a David acerca de aquellos hombres; y él envió a recibirlos, porque estaban muy avergonzados. Y el rey les dijo: Quedaos en Jericó hasta que os crezca la barba, y entonces volveréis.

6 And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah.

6 Y al ver los hijos de Amón que se habían hecho odiosos a David, Hanún y los hijos de Amón enviaron mil talentos de plata para tomar a sueldo carros y gente de a caballo de Mesopotamia, y de los sirios de Maaca, y de Soba.

7 So they hired thirty and two thousand chariots, and the king of Maachah and his people; who came and pitched before Medeba. And the children of Ammon gathered themselves together from their cities, and came to battle.

7 Y tomaron a sueldo treinta y dos mil carros, y al rey de Maaca y a su pueblo, los cuales vinieron y acamparon delante de Medeba. Y se reunieron también los hijos de Amón desde sus ciudades y vinieron a la guerra.

8 And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

8 Y cuando David lo oyó, envió a Joab con todo el ejército de los hombres valientes.

9 And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array before the gate of the city: and the kings that were come were by themselves in the field.

9 Y los hijos de Amón salieron y se pusieron en orden de batalla a la entrada de la ciudad; y los reyes que habían venido estaban aparte en el campo.

10 Now when Joab saw that the battle was set against him before and behind, he chose out of all the choice of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians.

10 Y viendo Joab que la batalla estaba contra él por delante y por detrás, escogió de entre todos los más aventajados que había en Israel y los puso en orden de batalla contra los sirios.

11 And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.

11 Y puso luego el resto de la gente al mando de Abisai, su hermano, y los puso en orden de batalla contra los hijos de Amón.

12 And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee.

12 Y dijo: Si los sirios son más fuertes que yo, tú me ayudarás; y si los hijos de Amón son más fuertes que tú, yo te ayudaré.

13 Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight.

13 Esfuérzate, y esforcémonos por nuestro pueblo y por las ciudades de nuestro Dios; y haga Jehová lo que bien le parezca.

14 So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.

14 Se acercó entonces Joab y el pueblo que estaba con él, para pelear contra los sirios; pero ellos huyeron delante de él.

15 And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, they likewise fled before Abishai his brother, and entered into the city. Then Joab came to Jerusalem.

15 Y cuando los hijos de Amón vieron que los sirios habían huido, huyeron también ellos delante de Abisai, su hermano, y entraron en la ciudad. Entonces Joab volvió a Jerusalén.

16 And when the Syrians saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they sent messengers, and drew forth the Syrians that were beyond the river: and Shophach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

16 Y al ver los sirios que habían caído delante de Israel, enviaron mensajeros y trajeron a los sirios que estaban al otro lado del río. Y Sofac, general del ejército de Hadar-ezer, estaba al frente de ellos.

17 And it was told David; and he gathered all Israel, and passed over Jordan, and came upon them, and set the battle in array against them. So when David had put the battle in array against the Syrians, they fought with him.

17 Y cuando se dio aviso a David, reunió a todo Israel, y pasó el Jordán, y vino a ellos y se puso en orden de batalla contra ellos. Y cuando David se puso en orden de batalla para enfrentarse a los sirios, estos pelearon contra él.

18 But the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew of the Syrians seven thousand men which fought in chariots, and forty thousand footmen, and killed Shophach the captain of the host.

18 Pero los sirios huyeron delante de Israel, y mató David de los sirios a siete mil hombres de los carros y a cuarenta mil hombres de a pie; asimismo mató a Sofac, general del ejército.

19 And when the servants of Hadarezer saw that they were put to the worse before Israel, they made peace with David, and became his servants: neither would the Syrians help the children of Ammon any more.

19 Y cuando los siervos de Hadar-ezer vieron que habían caído delante de Israel, concertaron la paz con David y le sirvieron; y los sirios nunca más quisieron ayudar a los hijos de Amón.
