1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judæa,

1 Y en aquellos días vino Juan el Bautista predicando en el desierto de Judea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

2 y diciendo: Arrepentíos, porque el reino de los cielos se ha acercado.

3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

3 Porque este es aquel de quien habló el profeta Isaías, cuando dijo: Voz del que clama en el desierto: Preparad el camino del Señor, enderezad sus sendas.

4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

4 Y Juan estaba vestido de pelo de camello y tenía un cinto de cuero alrededor de sus lomos; y su comida era langostas y miel silvestre.

5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judæa, and all the region round about Jordan,

5 Entonces acudían a él Jerusalén, y toda Judea y toda la provincia de alrededor del Jordán;

6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

6 y eran bautizados por él en el Jordán, confesando sus pecados.

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

7 Y cuando vio él que muchos de los fariseos y de los saduceos venían a su bautismo, les decía: ¡Oh generación de víboras! ¿Quién os ha enseñado a huir de la ira venidera?

8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

8 Haced, pues, frutos dignos de arrepentimiento,

9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

9 y no penséis decir dentro de vosotros mismos: A Abraham tenemos por padre; porque yo os digo que Dios puede levantar hijos a Abraham aun de estas piedras.

10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

10 Ahora, el hacha ya está puesta a la raíz de los árboles; por tanto, todo árbol que no da buen fruto es cortado y echado al fuego.

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

11 Yo a la verdad os bautizo en agua para arrepentimiento, pero el que viene tras mí, cuyo calzado yo no soy digno de llevar, es más poderoso que yo; él os bautizará con el Espíritu Santo y con fuego.

12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

12 Su aventador está en su mano, y limpiará su era; y recogerá su trigo en el alfolí y quemará la paja con fuego que nunca se apagará.

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

13 Entonces Jesús vino de Galilea al Jordán, a Juan, para ser bautizado por él.

14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

14 Pero Juan se lo impedía, diciendo: Yo necesito ser bautizado por ti, ¿y tú vienes a mí?

15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

15 Pero respondiendo Jesús, le dijo: Permítelo ahora, porque así nos conviene cumplir toda justicia. Entonces se lo permitió.

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

16 Y Jesús, después que fue bautizado, subió inmediatamente del agua; y he aquí, los cielos le fueron abiertos, y vio al Espíritu de Dios que descendía como paloma y se posaba sobre él.

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

17 Y he aquí, una voz de los cielos que decía: Este es mi Hijo amado, en quien me complazco.
