1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,

1 Puesto que ya muchos han tratado de poner en orden la historia de las cosas que entre nosotros han sido ciertísimas,

2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;

2 tal como nos lo enseñaron los que desde el principio lo vieron con sus ojos y fueron ministros de la palabra,

3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,

3 me ha parecido también a mí, después de haber investigado con diligencia todas las cosas desde el principio, escribírtelas en orden, oh excelentísimo Teófilo,

4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.

4 para que conozcas bien la verdad de las cosas en las cuales has sido enseñado.

5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

5 Hubo en los días de Herodes, rey de Judea, un sacerdote llamado Zacarías, del grupo de Abías; y su esposa era de las hijas de Aarón y se llamaba Elisabet.

6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

6 Y ambos eran justos delante de Dios y andaban irreprensibles en todos los mandamientos y estatutos del Señor.

7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

7 Pero no tenían hijos, porque Elisabet era estéril, y ambos eran ya de edad avanzada.

8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,

8 Y aconteció que, ejerciendo Zacarías el sacerdocio delante de Dios, según el orden de su grupo,

9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.

9 conforme a la costumbre del sacerdocio, le tocó en suerte ofrecer el incienso al entrar en el templo del Señor.

10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.

10 Y toda la multitud del pueblo estaba fuera, orando a la hora del incienso.

11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.

11 Entonces se le apareció un ángel del Señor puesto de pie a la derecha del altar del incienso.

12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.

12 Y al verle, Zacarías se turbó y cayó temor sobre él.

13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.

13 Pero el ángel le dijo: Zacarías, no temas, porque tu oración ha sido oída, y tu esposa Elisabet te dará a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre Juan.

14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.

14 Y tendrás gozo y alegría, y muchos se regocijarán por su nacimiento,

15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.

15 porque será grande delante del Señor. Y no beberá vino ni sidra, y será lleno del Espíritu Santo aun desde el vientre de su madre.

16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.

16 Y a muchos de los hijos de Israel hará volver al Señor su Dios.

17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.

17 Porque irá delante de él con el espíritu y el poder de Elías, para hacer volver los corazones de los padres a los hijos, y a los rebeldes a la prudencia de los justos, a fin de preparar para el Señor un pueblo bien dispuesto.

18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.

18 Y Zacarías dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo sabré esto? Porque yo ya soy viejo, y mi esposa es de edad avanzada.

19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.

19 Y respondiendo el ángel le dijo: Yo soy Gabriel, que estoy delante de Dios; y he sido enviado a hablarte y a darte estas buenas nuevas.

20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.

20 Y he aquí, quedarás mudo y no podrás hablar, hasta el día en que esto se haga, por cuanto no has creído mis palabras, las cuales se cumplirán a su tiempo.

21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.

21 Y el pueblo estaba esperando a Zacarías y se extrañaba de que él se tardara tanto en el templo.

22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.

22 Y cuando salió, no les podía hablar; y entonces comprendieron que había visto una visión en el templo; y él les hablaba por señas, y permaneció mudo.

23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.

23 Y aconteció que, cumplidos los días de su servicio, regresó a su casa.

24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,

24 Y después de aquellos días concibió su esposa Elisabet, y se recluyó en casa durante cinco meses, diciendo:

25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.

25 Así ha hecho el Señor conmigo en los días en que se dignó quitar mi afrenta entre los hombres.

26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,

26 Y al sexto mes, el ángel Gabriel fue enviado por Dios a una ciudad de Galilea llamada Nazaret,

27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.

27 a una virgen desposada con un varón que se llamaba José, de la casa de David; y el nombre de la virgen era María.

28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.

28 Y entrando el ángel a donde ella estaba, dijo: ¡Salve, muy favorecida! El Señor es contigo; bendita tú entre las mujeres.

29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.

29 Pero ella, cuando le vio, se turbó por sus palabras y pensaba qué salutación sería esta.

30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.

30 Entonces el ángel le dijo: María, no temas, porque has hallado gracia delante de Dios.

31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

31 Y he aquí, concebirás en tu vientre y darás a luz un hijo, y llamarás su nombre JESÚS.

32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

32 Este será grande y será llamado Hijo del Altísimo; y el Señor Dios le dará el trono de David, su padre.

33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

33 Y reinará en la casa de Jacob para siempre, y de su reino no habrá fin.

34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

34 Entonces María dijo al ángel: ¿Cómo será esto? Porque no conozco varón.

35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

35 Y respondiendo el ángel, le dijo: El Espíritu Santo vendrá sobre ti, y el poder del Altísimo te cubrirá con su sombra; por lo cual también el Santo Ser que va a nacer será llamado Hijo de Dios.

36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.

36 Y he aquí, tu parienta Elisabet también ha concebido hijo en su vejez; y este es el sexto mes para ella, la que era llamada estéril;

37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

37 porque ninguna cosa es imposible para Dios.

38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

38 Entonces María dijo: He aquí la sierva del Señor; hágase conmigo conforme a tu palabra. Y el ángel se fue de ella.

39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;

39 En aquellos días, levantándose María, fue a la montaña con prisa, a una ciudad de Judá;

40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.

40 y entró en casa de Zacarías y saludó a Elisabet.

41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

41 Y aconteció que cuando oyó Elisabet la salutación de María, la criatura saltó en su vientre; y Elisabet fue llena del Espíritu Santo

42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

42 y exclamó a gran voz y dijo: ¡Bendita tú entre las mujeres, y bendito el fruto de tu vientre!

43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?

43 ¿Por qué se me concede esto a mí, que la madre de mi Señor venga a mí?

44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.

44 Porque he aquí, cuando llegó la voz de tu salutación a mis oídos, la criatura saltó de alegría en mi vientre.

45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.

45 Y bienaventurada la que creyó, porque se cumplirán las cosas que le fueron dichas de parte del Señor.

46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,

46 Entonces María dijo: Engrandece mi alma al Señor;

47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

47 y mi espíritu se regocija en Dios mi Salvador,

48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

48 porque ha mirado la humilde condición de su sierva; porque he aquí, desde ahora me dirán bienaventurada todas las generaciones,

49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.

49 porque me ha hecho grandes cosas el Poderoso; y santo es su nombre.

50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.

50 Y su misericordia es de generación en generación a los que le temen.

51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.

51 Hizo proezas con su brazo; esparció a los soberbios en el pensamiento de sus corazones.

52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.

52 Quitó a los poderosos de los tronos y levantó a los humildes.

53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.

53 A los hambrientos llenó de bienes y a los ricos los despidió vacíos.

54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;

54 Socorrió a Israel, su siervo, acordándose de la misericordia,

55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.

55 de la cual habló a nuestros padres, a Abraham y a su descendencia para siempre.

56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.

56 Y se quedó María con ella como tres meses; después volvió a su casa.

57 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.

57 Y a Elisabet se le cumplió el tiempo de su alumbramiento, y dio a luz un hijo.

58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.

58 Y oyeron los vecinos y los parientes que Dios había hecho para con ella gran misericordia, y se alegraron con ella.

59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.

59 Y aconteció que al octavo día vinieron para circuncidar al niño, y le llamaban con el nombre de su padre, Zacarías.

60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.

60 Y respondiendo su madre, dijo: No, sino Juan será llamado.

61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.

61 Y le dijeron: ¿Por qué? No hay nadie en tu parentela que se llame con ese nombre.

62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.

62 Entonces preguntaron por señas a su padre cómo le quería llamar.

63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.

63 Y él, pidiendo una tablilla, escribió, diciendo: Juan es su nombre. Y todos se maravillaron.

64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.

64 En ese mismo momento fue abierta su boca y suelta su lengua, y habló, alabando a Dios.

65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judæa.

65 Y sobrevino un temor sobre todos los vecinos de ellos; y en todas las montañas de Judea se divulgaron todas estas cosas.

66 And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.

66 Y todos los que las oían las conservaban en su corazón, diciendo: ¿Quién, pues, será este niño? Y la mano del Señor estaba con él.

67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,

67 Y Zacarías, su padre, fue lleno del Espíritu Santo y profetizó, diciendo:

68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,

68 Bendito el Señor Dios de Israel, que ha visitado y redimido a su pueblo,

69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;

69 y nos levantó un cuerno de salvación en la casa de David, su siervo,

70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:

70 como habló por boca de sus santos profetas que fueron desde el principio:

71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

71 Salvación de nuestros enemigos y de la mano de todos los que nos aborrecieron,

72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

72 para hacer misericordia con nuestros padres y acordarse de su santo convenio;

73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,

73 del juramento que juró a Abraham, nuestro padre, que nos había de conceder,

74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,

74 que sin temor, librados de nuestros enemigos, le serviríamos

75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.

75 en santidad y en justicia delante de él todos nuestros días.

76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;

76 Y tú, niño, profeta del Altísimo serás llamado, porque irás delante de la faz del Señor para preparar sus caminos,

77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,

77 para dar conocimiento de salvación a su pueblo, para remisión de sus pecados,

78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,

78 por la tierna misericordia de nuestro Dios, con que nos visitó desde lo alto la aurora,

79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

79 para dar luz a los que habitan en tinieblas y en sombra de muerte, para encaminar nuestros pies por camino de paz.

80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.

80 Y el niño crecía y se fortalecía en espíritu; y estuvo en lugares desiertos hasta el día en que se mostró a Israel.
