1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews:

2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,

2 Y Pablo, como acostumbraba, entró a reunirse con ellos, y durante tres días de reposo discutió con ellos, empleando las Escrituras,

3 Opening and alleging, that Christ must needs have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom I preach unto you, is Christ.

3 declarando y exponiendo que era necesario que el Cristo padeciese y resucitase de entre los muertos; y decía: Jesús, a quien yo os anuncio, es el Cristo.

4 And some of them believed, and consorted with Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.

4 Y algunos de ellos creyeron y se juntaron con Pablo y con Silas; y una gran multitud de los griegos devotos, y de las mujeres principales no pocas.

5 But the Jews which believed not, moved with envy, took unto them certain lewd fellows of the baser sort, and gathered a company, and set all the city on an uproar, and assaulted the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

5 Entonces los judíos que eran incrédulos, teniendo celos, tomaron consigo a algunos ociosos, hombres malos, y juntando una turba, alborotaron la ciudad; y, acometiendo la casa de Jasón, procuraban sacarlos al pueblo.

6 And when they found them not, they drew Jason and certain brethren unto the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;

6 Pero al no hallarlos, trajeron a Jasón y a algunos hermanos ante las autoridades de la ciudad, dando voces: Estos que alborotan el mundo también han venido acá,

7 Whom Jason hath received: and these all do contrary to the decrees of Cæsar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.

7 a quienes Jasón ha recibido; y todos estos actúan contra los decretos de César, diciendo que hay otro rey, Jesús.

8 And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city, when they heard these things.

8 Y se alborotaron el pueblo y las autoridades de la ciudad al oír estas cosas.

9 And when they had taken security of Jason, and of the other, they let them go.

9 Pero después de recibir fianza de Jasón y de los demás, los soltaron.

10 And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.

10 Enseguida los hermanos enviaron de noche a Pablo y a Silas hasta Berea, quienes, habiendo llegado, entraron en la sinagoga de los judíos.

11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

11 Y estos eran más nobles que los que estaban en Tesalónica, pues recibieron la palabra con toda solicitud, escudriñando cada día las Escrituras para ver si estas cosas eran así.

12 Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.

12 Así que creyeron muchos de ellos, y mujeres griegas de distinción, y no pocos hombres.

13 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people.

13 Pero cuando los judíos de Tesalónica supieron que también en Berea era anunciada la palabra de Dios por Pablo, fueron allá y también alborotaron al pueblo.

14 And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still.

14 Pero de inmediato los hermanos enviaron a Pablo que fuese hacia el mar; y Silas y Timoteo se quedaron allí.

15 And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens: and receiving a commandment unto Silas and Timotheus for to come to him with all speed, they departed.

15 Y los que se habían encargado de conducir a Pablo le llevaron hasta Atenas; y habiendo recibido orden para Silas y Timoteo de que viniesen a él lo más pronto que pudiesen, partieron.

16 Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry.

16 Mientras Pablo los esperaba en Atenas, su espíritu se enardecía viendo la ciudad entregada a la idolatría.

17 Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him.

17 Así que discutía en la sinagoga con los judíos y con los creyentes, y en la plaza cada día con los que allí concurrían.

18 Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection.

18 Y algunos filósofos de los epicúreos y de los estoicos disputaban con él; y unos decían: ¿Qué querrá decir este palabrero? Y otros: Parece que es predicador de nuevos dioses; porque les predicaba a Jesús y la resurrección.

19 And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is?

19 Y tomándole, le trajeron al Areópago, diciendo: ¿Podremos saber qué es esta nueva doctrina que proclamas?

20 For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears: we would know therefore what these things mean.

20 Porque traes a nuestros oídos cosas extrañas; queremos, pues, saber qué quiere decir esto.

21 (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)

21 (Porque todos los atenienses y los extranjeros residentes allí, de ninguna otra cosa se ocupaban, sino en decir o en oír algo nuevo).

22 Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.

22 Pablo se puso en medio del Areópago y dijo: Varones atenienses, en todo observo que sois muy religiosos,

23 For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.

23 porque pasando y mirando vuestros santuarios, hallé también un altar en el cual estaba esta inscripción: AL DIOS NO CONOCIDO. Al que vosotros adoráis, pues, sin conocerle, es a quien yo os anuncio.

24 God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;

24 El Dios que hizo el mundo y todas las cosas que en él hay, siendo Señor del cielo y de la tierra, no habita en templos hechos por manos humanas,

25 Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things;

25 ni es honrado por manos de hombres, como si necesitara de algo, pues él es quien da a todos vida, y aliento y todas las cosas.

26 And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

26 Y de una sangre ha hecho todo el linaje de los hombres, para que habitasen sobre toda la faz de la tierra; y les ha prefijado el orden de los tiempos y los límites de la habitación de ellos,

27 That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us:

27 para que buscasen a Dios, si en alguna manera, palpando, le hallasen; aunque ciertamente no está lejos de cada uno de nosotros.

28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

28 Porque en él vivimos, y nos movemos y somos; como algunos de vuestros propios poetas también dijeron: Porque linaje suyo somos.

29 Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

29 Siendo, pues, linaje de Dios, no debemos pensar que la Divinidad sea semejante a oro, o a plata, o a piedra, escultura de arte y de imaginación de hombres.

30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

30 Pero Dios, habiendo pasado por alto los tiempos de esta ignorancia, ahora manda a todos los hombres en todo lugar que se arrepientan.

31 Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

31 Por cuanto ha establecido un día en el cual ha de juzgar al mundo con justicia, por aquel varón a quien ha designado, dando fe a todos al haberle levantado de entre los muertos.

32 And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked: and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter.

32 Pero cuando oyeron lo de la resurrección de los muertos, unos se burlaban, y otros decían: Ya te oiremos hablar acerca de esto otra vez.

33 So Paul departed from among them.

33 Y así Pablo salió de en medio de ellos.

34 Howbeit certain men clave unto him, and believed: among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

34 Pero algunos creyeron y se unieron a él, entre los que también estaban Dionisio, el del Areópago, y una mujer llamada Dámaris, y otros con ellos.
