1 Hearken, O ye elders of my church, and give ear to my word, and learn of me what I will concerning you, and also concerning this land unto which I have sent you.

1 Escuchad, oh élderes de mi iglesia, y dad oído a mi palabra, y de mí aprended mi voluntad en cuanto a vosotros, y también concerniente a esta tierra a la cual os he mandado.

2 For verily I say unto you, blessed is he that keepeth my commandments, whether in life or in death; and he that is faithful in tribulation, the reward of the same is greater in the kingdom of heaven.

2 Porque de cierto os digo, bienaventurado es el que guarda mis mandamientos, sea en vida o muerte; y el que es fiel en la tribulación tendrá mayor galardón en el reino de los cielos.

3 Ye cannot behold with your natural eyes, for the present time, the design of your God concerning those things which shall come hereafter, and the glory which shall follow after much tribulation.

3 Por lo pronto no podéis ver con vuestros ojos naturales el designio de vuestro Dios concerniente a las cosas que vendrán más adelante, ni la gloria que seguirá después de mucha tribulación.

4 For after much tribulation come the blessings. Wherefore the day cometh that ye shall be crowned with much glory; the hour is not yet, but is nigh at hand.

4 Porque tras mucha tribulación vienen las bendiciones. Por tanto, viene el día en que seréis coronados con mucha gloria; la hora no es aún, mas está cerca.

5 Remember this, which I tell you before, that you may lay it to heart, and receive that which is to follow.

5 Recordad esto que os digo de antemano, para que lo consideréis en el corazón y recibáis lo que está por venir.

6 Behold, verily I say unto you, for this cause I have sent you—that you might be obedient, and that your hearts might be prepared to bear testimony of the things which are to come;

6 He aquí, de cierto os digo, por esta causa os he enviado: para que seáis obedientes, y vuestros corazones estén preparados para testificar de las cosas que han de venir;

7 And also that you might be honored in laying the foundation, and in bearing record of the land upon which the Zion of God shall stand;

7 y para que tengáis el honor de poner el fundamento y de dar testimonio de la tierra sobre la cual se hallará la Sion de Dios;

8 And also that a feast of fat things might be prepared for the poor; yea, a feast of fat things, of wine on the lees well refined, that the earth may know that the mouths of the prophets shall not fail;

8 y también para que se prepare un banquete de manjares suculentos para los pobres; sí, una fiesta de gruesos tuétanos, de vino purificado bien refinado, para que sepa la tierra que las palabras de los profetas no fallarán;

9 Yea, a supper of the house of the Lord, well prepared, unto which all nations shall be invited.

9 sí, una cena de la casa del Señor, bien preparada, a la cual serán convidadas todas las naciones.

10 First, the rich and the learned, the wise and the noble;

10 Primero los ricos y los instruidos, los sabios y los nobles;

11 And after that cometh the day of my power; then shall the poor, the lame, and the blind, and the deaf, come in unto the marriage of the Lamb, and partake of the supper of the Lord, prepared for the great day to come.

11 y después viene el día de mi poder; entonces los pobres, los cojos, los ciegos y los sordos vendrán a las bodas del Cordero, y comerán la cena del Señor, preparada para el gran día que ha de venir.

12 Behold, I, the Lord, have spoken it.

12 He aquí, yo, el Señor, lo he hablado.

13 And that the testimony might go forth from Zion, yea, from the mouth of the city of the heritage of God—

13 Y para que el testimonio salga de Sion, sí, de la boca de la ciudad de la herencia de Dios;

14 Yea, for this cause I have sent you hither, and have selected my servant Edward Partridge, and have appointed unto him his mission in this land.

14 sí, por esta causa os he enviado aquí, y he escogido a mi siervo Edward Partridge y le he designado su misión en esta tierra.

15 But if he repent not of his sins, which are unbelief and blindness of heart, let him take heed lest he fall.

15 Pero si no se arrepiente de sus pecados, que son la incredulidad y la dureza de corazón, cuídese, no sea que caiga.

16 Behold his mission is given unto him, and it shall not be given again.

16 He aquí, le es designada su misión, y no se volverá a dar.

17 And whoso standeth in this mission is appointed to be a judge in Israel, like as it was in ancient days, to divide the lands of the heritage of God unto his children;

17 Y el que desempeñe esta misión es nombrado para ser juez en Israel, como fue en los días antiguos, para repartir las tierras de la herencia de Dios a sus hijos;

18 And to judge his people by the testimony of the just, and by the assistance of his counselors, according to the laws of the kingdom which are given by the prophets of God.

18 y para juzgar a su pueblo por el testimonio de los justos, y con la ayuda de sus consejeros, conforme a las leyes del reino dadas por los profetas de Dios.

19 For verily I say unto you, my law shall be kept on this land.

19 Pues de cierto os digo que se guardará mi ley en esta tierra.

20 Let no man think he is ruler; but let God rule him that judgeth, according to the counsel of his own will, or, in other words, him that counseleth or sitteth upon the judgment seat.

20 No piense ningún hombre ser gobernante; más bien, gobierne Dios, según el designio de su voluntad, al que juzga, o en otras palabras, al que aconseja o se sienta en el tribunal.

21 Let no man break the laws of the land, for he that keepeth the laws of God hath no need to break the laws of the land.

21 Ninguno quebrante las leyes del país, porque quien guarda las leyes de Dios no tiene necesidad de infringir las leyes del país.

22 Wherefore, be subject to the powers that be, until he reigns whose right it is to reign, and subdues all enemies under his feet.

22 Sujetaos, pues, a las potestades existentes, hasta que reine aquel cuyo derecho es reinar, y someta a todos sus enemigos debajo de sus pies.

23 Behold, the laws which ye have received from my hand are the laws of the church, and in this light ye shall hold them forth. Behold, here is wisdom.

23 He aquí, las leyes que habéis recibido de mi mano son las leyes de la iglesia, y así las habéis de presentar. He aquí, en esto hay sabiduría.

24 And now, as I spake concerning my servant Edward Partridge, this land is the land of his residence, and those whom he has appointed for his counselors; and also the land of the residence of him whom I have appointed to keep my storehouse;

24 Y ahora, según dije concerniente a mi siervo Edward Partridge, esta es la tierra de su residencia y de los que ha escogido para ser sus consejeros; y también la tierra de la residencia de aquel que he nombrado para encargarse de mi almacén;

25 Wherefore, let them bring their families to this land, as they shall counsel between themselves and me.

25 por lo tanto, traigan ellos sus familias a esta tierra, según lo que determinen entre sí y conmigo.

26 For behold, it is not meet that I should command in all things; for he that is compelled in all things, the same is a slothful and not a wise servant; wherefore he receiveth no reward.

26 Porque he aquí, no conviene que yo mande en todas las cosas; porque el que es compelido en todo es un siervo perezoso y no sabio; por tanto, no recibe galardón alguno.

27 Verily I say, men should be anxiously engaged in a good cause, and do many things of their own free will, and bring to pass much righteousness;

27 De cierto digo que los hombres deben estar anhelosamente consagrados a una causa buena, y hacer muchas cosas de su propia voluntad y efectuar mucha justicia;

28 For the power is in them, wherein they are agents unto themselves. And inasmuch as men do good they shall in nowise lose their reward.

28 porque el poder está en ellos, y en esto vienen a ser sus propios agentes. Y en tanto que los hombres hagan lo bueno, de ninguna manera perderán su recompensa.

29 But he that doeth not anything until he is commanded, and receiveth a commandment with doubtful heart, and keepeth it with slothfulness, the same is damned.

29 Mas el que no hace nada hasta que se le mande, y recibe un mandamiento con corazón dudoso, y lo cumple desidiosamente, ya es condenado.

30 Who am I that made man, saith the Lord, that will hold him guiltless that obeys not my commandments?

30 ¿Quién soy yo, que hice al hombre, dice el Señor, para tener sin culpa al que no guarda mis mandamientos?

31 Who am I, saith the Lord, that have promised and have not fulfilled?

31 ¿Quién soy yo, dice el Señor, para prometer y no cumplir?

32 I command and men obey not; I revoke and they receive not the blessing.

32 Mando, y los hombres no obedecen; revoco, y no reciben la bendición.

33 Then they say in their hearts: This is not the work of the Lord, for his promises are not fulfilled. But wo unto such, for their reward lurketh beneath, and not from above.

33 Entonces dicen en su corazón: Esta no es la obra del Señor, porque sus promesas no se cumplen. Pero, ¡ay de tales!, porque su recompensa yace abajo, y no es de arriba.

34 And now I give unto you further directions concerning this land.

34 Y ahora os doy instrucciones adicionales en cuanto a esta tierra.

35 It is wisdom in me that my servant Martin Harris should be an example unto the church, in laying his moneys before the bishop of the church.

35 Me es prudente que mi siervo Martin Harris dé un ejemplo a la iglesia, entregando su dinero al obispo de ella.

36 And also, this is a law unto every man that cometh unto this land to receive an inheritance; and he shall do with his moneys according as the law directs.

36 Además, esto es una ley para todo hombre que venga a esta tierra para recibir una heredad; y hará con su dinero lo que la ley indique.

37 And it is wisdom also that there should be lands purchased in Independence, for the place of the storehouse, and also for the house of the printing.

37 Y también conviene que se compren terrenos en Independence para el sitio del almacén y también para la imprenta.

38 And other directions concerning my servant Martin Harris shall be given him of the Spirit, that he may receive his inheritance as seemeth him good;

38 Y mi siervo Martin Harris recibirá otras instrucciones del Espíritu, a fin de que reciba su heredad como bien le parezca;

39 And let him repent of his sins, for he seeketh the praise of the world.

39 y arrepiéntase de sus pecados, pues busca la alabanza del mundo.

40 And also let my servant William W. Phelps stand in the office to which I have appointed him, and receive his inheritance in the land;

40 Ocupe también mi siervo William W. Phelps el puesto al cual lo he nombrado, y reciba su heredad en la tierra;

41 And also he hath need to repent, for I, the Lord, am not well pleased with him, for he seeketh to excel, and he is not sufficiently meek before me.

41 y también él tiene necesidad de arrepentirse, pues yo, el Señor, no estoy muy complacido con él, porque pretende sobresalir, y no es suficientemente manso delante de mí.

42 Behold, he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more.

42 He aquí, quien se ha arrepentido de sus pecados es perdonado; y yo, el Señor, no los recuerdo más.

43 By this ye may know if a man repenteth of his sins—behold, he will confess them and forsake them.

43 Por esto podréis saber si un hombre se arrepiente de sus pecados: He aquí, los confesará y los abandonará.

44 And now, verily, I say concerning the residue of the elders of my church, the time has not yet come, for many years, for them to receive their inheritance in this land, except they desire it through the prayer of faith, only as it shall be appointed unto them of the Lord.

44 Y ahora, de cierto digo tocante al resto de los élderes de mi iglesia: No llegará en muchos años todavía la hora en que han de recibir su heredad en esta tierra, a menos que lo deseen por la oración de fe y eso de acuerdo con lo que el Señor les señale.

45 For, behold, they shall push the people together from the ends of the earth.

45 Pues he aquí, ellos reunirán al pueblo desde los extremos de la tierra.

46 Wherefore, assemble yourselves together; and they who are not appointed to stay in this land, let them preach the gospel in the regions round about; and after that let them return to their homes.

46 Por tanto, congregaos; y aquellos que no son nombrados para quedarse en esta tierra, prediquen el evangelio en las regiones inmediatas; y vuelvan después a sus hogares.

47 Let them preach by the way, and bear testimony of the truth in all places, and call upon the rich, the high and the low, and the poor to repent.

47 Prediquen por el camino y den testimonio de la verdad en todo lugar, llamando al arrepentimiento al rico, al noble y al plebeyo, y al pobre.

48 And let them build up churches, inasmuch as the inhabitants of the earth will repent.

48 Y establezcan iglesias, si se arrepienten los habitantes de la tierra.

49 And let there be an agent appointed by the voice of the church, unto the church in Ohio, to receive moneys to purchase lands in Zion.

49 Y por la voz de la iglesia, nómbrese un agente para la iglesia en Ohio, para que reciba dinero a fin de comprar tierras en Sion.

50 And I give unto my servant Sidney Rigdon a commandment, that he shall write a description of the land of Zion, and a statement of the will of God, as it shall be made known by the Spirit unto him;

50 Y le doy a mi siervo Sidney Rigdon el mandamiento de escribir una descripción de la tierra de Sion y una declaración de la voluntad de Dios, según se lo manifieste el Espíritu;

51 And an epistle and subscription, to be presented unto all the churches to obtain moneys, to be put into the hands of the bishop, of himself or the agent, as seemeth him good or as he shall direct, to purchase lands for an inheritance for the children of God.

51 asimismo, una epístola y una subscripción que serán presentadas en todas las iglesias, a fin de obtener dinero que se pondrá en manos del obispo, en manos de él o del agente, como mejor le parezca o él lo indique, para comprar tierras que sean una heredad para los hijos de Dios.

52 For, behold, verily I say unto you, the Lord willeth that the disciples and the children of men should open their hearts, even to purchase this whole region of country, as soon as time will permit.

52 Porque he aquí, de cierto os digo, el Señor quiere que los discípulos y los hijos de los hombres abran su corazón, aun hasta comprar todos los terrenos de esta región, en cuanto sea posible.

53 Behold, here is wisdom. Let them do this lest they receive none inheritance, save it be by the shedding of blood.

53 He aquí, en esto hay sabiduría. Hagan esto, no sea que no reciban herencia, sino por el derramamiento de sangre.

54 And again, inasmuch as there is land obtained, let there be workmen sent forth of all kinds unto this land, to labor for the saints of God.

54 Y además, si se obtienen terrenos, mándense obreros de toda clase a esta tierra, para trabajar por el bien de los santos de Dios.

55 Let all these things be done in order; and let the privileges of the lands be made known from time to time, by the bishop or the agent of the church.

55 Háganse todas estas cosas con orden; y anuncie el obispo o el agente de la iglesia los privilegios de las tierras, de cuando en cuando.

56 And let the work of the gathering be not in haste, nor by flight; but let it be done as it shall be counseled by the elders of the church at the conferences, according to the knowledge which they receive from time to time.

56 Y hágase la obra del recogimiento no con prisa ni huyendo, sino como lo aconsejen los élderes de la iglesia en las conferencias, de acuerdo con el conocimiento que reciban de cuando en cuando.

57 And let my servant Sidney Rigdon consecrate and dedicate this land, and the spot for the temple, unto the Lord.

57 Y consagre y dedique esta tierra al Señor, mi siervo Sidney Rigdon, así como el sitio para el templo.

58 And let a conference meeting be called; and after that let my servants Sidney Rigdon and Joseph Smith, Jun., return, and also Oliver Cowdery with them, to accomplish the residue of the work which I have appointed unto them in their own land, and the residue as shall be ruled by the conferences.

58 Y convóquese una conferencia; y habiéndose hecho, regresen mis siervos Sidney Rigdon y José Smith, hijo, y acompáñelos también Oliver Cowdery, para cumplir lo que resta de la obra que les he señalado en su propia tierra, y lo demás conforme a lo que se determinare en las conferencias.

59 And let no man return from this land except he bear record by the way, of that which he knows and most assuredly believes.

59 Y ningún hombre regrese de esta tierra sin dar testimonio por el camino de lo que sabe y de cierto cree.

60 Let that which has been bestowed upon Ziba Peterson be taken from him; and let him stand as a member in the church, and labor with his own hands, with the brethren, until he is sufficiently chastened for all his sins; for he confesseth them not, and he thinketh to hide them.

60 Quítese a Ziba Peterson lo que le ha sido conferido, y permanezca como miembro de la iglesia, y obre con sus propias manos, junto con los hermanos, hasta que sea suficientemente disciplinado por todos sus pecados; porque no los confiesa, y piensa esconderlos.

61 Let the residue of the elders of this church, who are coming to this land, some of whom are exceedingly blessed even above measure, also hold a conference upon this land.

61 Convoquen también una conferencia en esta tierra los demás élderes de esta iglesia que vienen acá, algunos de los cuales son extremadamente bendecidos, sí, sobremanera.

62 And let my servant Edward Partridge direct the conference which shall be held by them.

62 Y dirija mi siervo Edward Partridge la conferencia que ellos efectúen.

63 And let them also return, preaching the gospel by the way, bearing record of the things which are revealed unto them.

63 Y también vuelvan ellos, predicando el evangelio por el camino, testificando acerca de las cosas que les son reveladas.

64 For, verily, the sound must go forth from this place into all the world, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth—the gospel must be preached unto every creature, with signs following them that believe.

64 Porque en verdad, el pregón tiene que salir desde este lugar a todo el mundo y a los lejanos extremos de la tierra; el evangelio ha de ser predicado a toda criatura, y las señales seguirán a los que crean.

65 And behold the Son of Man cometh. Amen.

65 Y he aquí, el Hijo del Hombre viene. Amén.
